I was delighted to learn that after showing my god daughter the moves she has taken upon herself to show enough interest to get her dad to play with her. Does anyone know a site where children can play? (without fear of coming accross weirdos etc)
edit: she is only 7

Ive recently taught my god daughter/ niece aged 7 how to play and she's very good for her age 🙂 But in answer to your question i very much doubt that there are any internet chess sites that are not full to the brim with all manner of weirdos.

Chess is a game for inadequate geeks with communication problems and no friends...

Now, if these people are so challenged in their communications that they have to resort to the internet to play the game...that surely sais enough...

The only chess sites ive played alot on are RHP and ICC. RHP has it's fair share of nutters and weirdos but ICC is like a freak show of the most disturbing kind. I would rather any child of mine watch the texas chainsaw massacre than come accross those dispicable fiends which litter that site. However there may be some chess sites with only decent and normal clientele..
(and pigs might fly)
yeah you are right, its apity but I think I will have to coach/encourage her without exposing her to internet chess for the time being, I thought perhaps there might be achildrens chess internet site? probably not (as weirdos of the worst kind would find and use that site)

Don't you see? The way the world works and the Internet making the it all so small it almost fits right there in your pocket, it is inevitable that your daughters will learn the filthiest language and obtain the most disturbing thoughts a good parent can imagine.

You'd do much better preparing your daughters for the inevitable by talking about it with them, encouraging them to talk with you about anything disturbing and helping them cope with anything weird that happens to them on the Internet, than trying to shield them from what you must know will eventually happen. Which is:

Them running across an Internet weirdo during an innocent game of chess.

Oh, the horror.

again you are probably right but I thought if there was such a thing as a childrens chess site this would be great , but obviously that is too idealistic of me

Now, that's the spirit. 🙂

Seriously, though. To me this is the best thing a parent can do. Instead of shielding the child from all the horrors of the world (I mean not exactly exposing the child either, but... you probably know what I mean), help the child deal with anything that is fundamentally disturbing. It's your duty as parents to help the child survive in the world, while hopefully teaching him/her to be a compassionate/giving person (within reason).

That and to make sure the child when grown up will take proper care of your old and weary selfs. 😉

Yes, the horror! You know not of what you speak. Have you ever played on ICC? Unless you want your child to develop psychologial problems (if you have children) Then KEEP THEM AWAY FROM ICC. ( and possibly some other sites.)
Well, that may be. But surely there must be some site out there for children chess.

http://stansco.com/netchess/

I haven't checked it out more thouroghly. But the homepage looks promising, no?..
