No child needs to encounter this sort of stuff.
yes i agree i thought perhaps ther just might be one site, but that is too idealistic and ther is no site suitable so its one to one encouragement for now

Or?.. You could suggest as a site idea, that RHP creates a children account kind of thingie.

When creating such an account, you can only access the "children only forum" and play chess with other children your age. You (as RHP members and parents) can checkout what's happening in the children forums, and all is well.

Search for kids chess academy. Looks pretty good. I know they have a computer you can play against but i think they might have an online thing for kids also.

In addition to school- and library-based chess clubs, there are also plenty of chess computer programs (I didn't read through all the posts, so apologies if this was already mentioned). In the US schools, students can order books and computer programs at a cheap price, but I don't know about your neck of the woods.

Thats what I would do, seek out local female players who might
take an interest in her. I think a big girl player would motivate her
more than guys at her age. So see if there is a local club.
She needs to play over the board for a while anyway. Get her
a big sister.

Now, if these people are so challenged in their communications that they have to resort to the internet to play the game...that surely sais enough...
Klingon I thought you had friends.

Play with her OTB to teach her the game. I think RHP is a fine place for kids, just tell her not to get involved in chat. I've never had an abusive message here, but then I don't play kids or newbies. If she gets that sort of stuff, then report it. Russ will sort it out.

I would guess that if she stayed away from the forums it would be fine. Although I think OTB might be better for a while as a teaching tool.

I was under the impression that children were not allowed on the site, but I can't find it mentioned in the tos, so I guess they must be allowed?

Children under 13 are definitely not allowed to play on the site. It's because the site collects personal information from everyone when they register (name and email address) and Russ would be legally required to get written consent from the parents or guardians of every Under 13 year old who wished to join. It's just a lot easier to ban them from joining.

But if her father plays here then it's not exactly difficult to get parental consent! I'm sure Russ would make an exception for an already paying members daughter. 😕
