No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Cream cheese frosting on carrot cake is to die for.

You can't really get all the way to best carrot cake without it.
Off with the icing and pour on some creme Anglais. Great dessert.

Isn't this basically a custard sauce (honestly, what is with you guys and custard)?

Fine for bowls of fruit or bundt cakes. One would prefer a heavier frosting (thus cream cheese and not, say, whipped cream) for the heavier carrot cake.

Custard tart.
My Nana used to buy me one many moons ago.
Not really a cake, is it?

More of a 'pudding pie'.

Not far off, but Pastel de nata are my current addiction.
I've not seen these before.

Would it be too gauche to put a spoon of jam on top?

Still, not a proper cake.

Any cake with fresh berries and vanilla.

You seriously have to track one down immediately and eat it. (But not from Costa. I repeat, not from Costa). Jam is okay, but as long as you put it directly in the bin and nowhere near the tart.

Can't believe you haven't had pastel de natas or Maltesers. That's basically all I ate yesterday.

My mother’s devil’s food cake. I don’t know the exact recipe, but it had extra cocoa powder and was served warm with runny chocolate frosting poured over it.
Mmm yes, manage some self control after getting through 4 but they are only tiny.

You’re right, tooth care never was a priority for my Polish parents having been deported to Kazakhstan in their teens where they had to scrounge for food.

My mother had naturally beautiful teeth. I can't remember her ever telling me to take good care of mine, and I guess I didn't until I had my own first dental treatments as teenager. CocaCola was a disaster for many.
