the 8 most powerful people in the world get together to try and help the world because they can help the world. they're talking about such important subjects as poverty and pollution, and they are trying to change things fort he better.

what's so wrong about that?!? the protests outside gleneagles today was organised by "G8 alternatives", an organisation [i]opposed[i] to the G8. i can see why people are trying to get the leaders to talk about other stuff, and why (vaguely) people may be against america. but not why people are trying to stop it!

8 incredibly rich people meet at a soiree.

Incredibly rich person #1: My goodness, there are poor people out there, perhaps we should do something.

Incredibly rich person #2: By God, #1, you're right - pass the caviare and chips, by the way - poor people - out there - the horror!

Incredibly rich person #3: That's terrible. Imagine being poor.

<awkward pause>

Okay, that didn't work. I suppose they don't have caviare and chips, then.

Incredibly rich person #4: Let's give them something. That will make them happy, and maybe they'll go away.

Incredibly rich person #3 Caviare and chips?

Incredibly rich person #4: No. I was thinking of loaning them some money. Then they can buy more stuff off us.

Incredibly rich person #5: Nice thinking, #4.

Incredibly rich person #6: No, that's a bit callous, really. I was thinking more of loaning them money, then letting them cancel all their debts in return for mortgaging their entire future to us.

Incredibly rich person #7: That seems very reasonable. Anyone can be as rich as us if they put their mind to it.

Incredibly rich person #8: Not if I have anything to say about it, they bloody won't.

All: More caviare, vicar?

Genius, your name betrays you. G8 getting together to help the world!? You are sadly mistaken, all the G8 does is allow the richest people in the world to get together and talk about how to get richer while ripping off the poor. Thats what everyone is protesting about.

Tell you what, why dont you start a protest to support the G8 summit. Im sure all the well informed individuals will join you...

The story of how the G8 was formed - and in fact still is - is very telling. A bunch of wealthy nations discover their power at international conferences and decide to form a club so they can exert it more often, and effectively exclude time-wasting poor nations who no-one really respects anyway. Remember that old That Was the Week That Was parody of Harold MacMillan travelling the world "for your benefit, and at your expense"? That's the G8 tagline.

i haven't read all your posts fully as i've nto got time-but remember that russia is actually a net receiver of aid...the men are powerful, and generally, but not always, rich...

------------------------------------

and having read all your posts, do any of you have a better idea? anyone? and i'll get back to this later, but once again i have to flee...

EDIT 2: also, in my first post only the word "opposed" was meant to be in italics. not the whole of the last sentence...
