Thanks jonifandango. What should I google for "exercise routine" or what?

Just did a quick google and found following which looks OK

Routine for beginners + if you click on exercise, diagrams/demos are also shown.

http://www.thepumpingstation.com/beginner.html
Theres also an exercise and workout database available.

Things too remember if youre training
1) always use a spotter if you're doing an exercise like bench pressing
If you dont have a training partner just ask one of the gym staff or another gym goer.

2) As a general rule of thumb, breath out (exhale) when under pressure during an exercise. DONT hold your breath.

If you sign up to a decent gym then they should be able to supply you with a tailored routine and walk you through the exercises etc.

Anyways good luck

Don't go to the gym unless you've got some good moderation skills. It's easier to go home and work.

There's so many little things you can do.

My morning routine

three sets of 30 - 35 pushups, or one set of 60.

lunges on the stairs, slowly.

chinups (using a tree in my yard, lol. - will get a bar in my basement soon i hope.)

Occasionally I do situps, tricep-pushups, and run with my dog.

Trust me, I've come a long way in doing this simple routine! I remember I had a thread up here on pushups once...like a year ago. When I started I could do 20!! Now 60!! Run around your neighborhood with your dog, throw a football around...if you are active + pushups + eat well = good shape.

Here is a good tip from me. Always do just less then your maximum effort - that way you wont cripple yourself every time you excersise and feel like you WANT to go back for more, rather then it being a chore.

Also, it means that if you get into a fight on the way home from the gym, you still have some powers left to beat them off - you would really be kicking yourself if you had exhausted all your energy doing one more lift then needed and then lose a fight as well - that would be a bad day.

Here's another good tip from me too! If you're over 40 forget it!
Picking your kids up is more than enough exercise.

If you do consider going to the gym then get a full med check from your GP first. Picking up that first 5Kg might just see you off! 😀😀

Exercise can lengthen life 🙂

I'd say that's more the case if you're 75+

The problem with muscles is that it becomes fat when you're 40.

Then what does fat become when you're 40?

Edit: Before anyone points out to shav that fat and muscle tissue are entirely different and don't magically transform into one another, I think his comment was made in jest, only an idiot would think muscle turns into fat)

I work out alot, run. But I hate sharing the gym with other human beings. They are so annoying.

The key is to not let your muscles get too used to a workout and to change things often.
