The case of an 11-year-old schoolgirl who became pregnant has prompted calls for better education on sexual health.
The girl, now aged 12, is set to break the record for being the UK's youngest mother.
She told a national newspaper she is "really excited" about having a child after losing her virginity to a boy aged 15 in Edinburgh.
The girl, from West Lothian, is due to give birth in a few weeks, breaking the record set by Jenny Teague of Dorset, who had a baby aged 12 years and nine months in 1997.
The girl, who has not been named, told The Scottish Sun: "I think I'll be able to cope as I've had lots of practice looking after my brothers."
She said she thought she might be pregnant after having unprotected sex on a night out in Edinburgh last August. The girl's 34-year-old mother told the Sun she was proud of her daughter. The mother-to-be, who smokes up to 20 cigarettes a day according to the newspaper, said she hoped the baby would be a boy.
But the Scottish Conservatives called for society and families to unite to change attitudes towards sex following the news. Health spokeswoman Nanette Milne MSP said: "This news will have shocked many people and the impact on the lives of the two children, the mum-to-be and her baby, must be the first concern.
"I hope that this incident will draw attention to failings that have allowed such a young girl to go on a night out, get drunk, get pregnant, yet seemingly be ignorant about the risks and consequences."
The news sparked outrage from the Catholic Church. A spokesman said: "Apart from anything else, what has happened is illegal as the girl is under age. It is indicative of an increasingly promiscuous culture. As a society, Scotland does not seem to be as concerned as it should be about under age sexual activity and promiscuous behaviour on the part of older teenagers."
A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said the case would be the subject of a child protection review and the matter would be reported to the Children's Reporter and the procurator fiscal.
