I think in this case I was using great to mean:

notable; remarkable; exceptionally outstanding

As in, Nelson Mandela was an exceptionally outstanding individual who overcame remarkable odds to make notable contributions to the cause of freedom.

Flynt was a party in a number of important legal actions; Falwell vs. Hustler being the most important, obviously.

I don't think I would count him or Hefner in the same league with Mandela and Ghandi.
