My vote would go to the Dutch team of 1974, even though they never won the World Cup. At club level it has to be the Real Madrid team of the 1950's, early 1960's.

The Manchester United treble winning team of 1999. Some of the forward play by Cole and Yorke especially was breathtaking. Combine that with the serious wing play of Giggs, Beckham and Blomqvist, the middle genius of Keane and Scholes and the goalkeeping of Schmeichal.

Absolute genius.

I would say the 1992-1995 Dallas Cowboys.

I think you might have to concede the point to the English- they did invent football, so you yanks then claiming that your recent invention have some kind of monopoly on the word is rather presumptuous. Besides, American football is a girly sport, we have already concluded that in another thread.

Now, if you had been reasoning with Gaelic football, and rugby football, then I might have agreed!

By they way, the answer is obviously the Genoa CFC championship-winning team of 1924.

COME ON YOU GRYPHONS!!!

Internationally, I might place a vote in favour of the 1982 Italian World Cup Winners. They fairly humiliated the Germans that year, with one of the best, telivised spectacles ever recorded!

FORZA GLI AZZURRI!

What about best player? I have my own ideas, but what do you all think?

Of course you cannot really compare today's pampered, overpaid footballers with teams of yesteryear. Lots of footballers in the olden days had other jobs as well and the ball was a lot heavier as well.

So many bowls! And how many china tea pots?

I'm sure the must have had quite a tea party to celebrate, and then plaited one another’s hair.

How delightful!

How can there be a debate about this?

The '85 Bears were the greatest, most inspirational football team of all-time, hands down, end of discussion.

Even I remember the 49's when Montana was quarterback, they rocked and I don't even watch American Football. I mean what sort of sport breaks for TV adverts?

No doubt. I love how (European) Football has no commercials. But that would never happen here for any sport...

I had the opportunity to see them play quite a lot, Jimmy Johnstone, Willie Wallace (ex Hearts man), Willie Gemmell, Bobby Murdoch, John Hughes, Bertie Auld, Ronnie Simpson. Great team. Almost forgot, David Hay and Bertie Auld. Cannot remember others.

Maybe you should start a new sport which has no TV control, lead the backlash against modeern media through underground sport. Something like Rollerball?
