Just bought it today and I'm really enjoying it... except... well, you see it's my little finger. I've never realised before quite how useless and slow my little finger is. I can manage using four fret buttons but when I try to use all five it is as if it is the first time my brain has ever sent my little finger a message.

Does anyone have any tips as to how I can improve the dexterity of the little finger on my left hand?

Start by moving it a lot eg. open and close your hand a lot. Then lift things with only that finger. Make push-ups with fewer fingers and focus on that one. Practice with only that finger. Etc.

Maybe you could build up your pinky by playing a real guitar?

I am guessing that it would be more difficult to play a real guitar so I have no wish to try.

Put all your finger tips on one hand together and place an elastic band around them and then open and close your hand in repetitions of 20 or so (depends on the strength of the band an also your hand as it is now, so basically do it till it begins to hurt, then do 5 more).

Thank you everybody but it seems my little finger and ring finger have a few neurons crossed, neither are capable of independant movement as I require. Can you get hand transplants?

I have often thought this myself. I have played guitar for 15 years and still suffer from a weak pinky on the left. It's not that it seems weak but just weak minded, in that, it follows my freaking ring finger like a sheep.
I will have to try the elastic band strengthening tip from sleepy Starrman though.
If only I could afford an elastic band. Tsk. 🙂

One thing that really strengthened up my little finger was minor third trills.
I played a lot of riffs that involved trilling with my first and fourth fingers across 3 frets, then shifting position quickly as well.
Something like:
2-5-2-5 x 4
3-6-3-6 x 4
2-5-2-5-3-6-3-6-5-8-5-8-3-6-3-6
etc.
Played really fast.
If you can keep it up for more than a few tens of seconds at first attempt you're doing well.

I think it's better to pick the ear, to get that stinky, black wax off.

And the belly button.
