My home PC won't even turn on now 🙁. When I try the PC just beeps at me; one short beep followed by 2 long, then nothing. It's probably a no hoper, but could anyone tell me what it means. I figure it's trying to tell me a vital component is unplugged/broken/otherwise undetectable but have no idea what.

Thanks to anyone who has any ideas.

The comp doesn't get feedback from the monitor to know if it is on
or not. The beeps described seem to indicate a problem with the
monitor card if its in its agi slot or the built-in video driver electronics
on the MOBO (Motherboard)
In your case, it would be better to have a separate video card rather
than a built in one because that can be changed easily.
If its the built-in video on the MOBO, you might try an old PCI video
card or AGI slot card, those plugins might be able to take over if the
onboard video has gone bad. Worth a try.

I haven't followed the links posted above by the others, but beeps normally mean that somethings not seated right.

I'd recommend opening up your pc, and then taking out and then putting back in your graphics card and memory sticks. If that doesn't work, try reseating the rest of your cards. If that doesn't work, try reseating your cpu.

Hope this helps,

Also a good point. Half plugged in cards are half the problem with
half the computers on half the market!🙂
Seriously, even cards that are fully plugged in may have dirt on a
contact which makes for a poor connection so take out the cards,
clean the gold contacts by just wiping them on a clean T shirt or
something else soft. One way to clean the contacts is with a pencil
eraser. Not an ink eraser, too abrasive. dip a piece of Tshirt cloth
with some rubbing alcohol and clean off the eraser leftovers with a
bit of light rubbing. Also if you can find a can of compressed air, the
kind used to clean keyboards you can find at stores like Staples,
Circuit City, Best Buy or some local computer nerd store, shoot
some compressed air into the socket itself, this will get out hairs, lint
and dust. Don't keep shooting a full flow for a long time in one spot,
just spritz, spritz, spritz. If you keep a long time flow with these cans,
you get freezing and that means a coating of water when the ice
melts leaving you with yet another kind of cleaning job. So short bursts
are best with the compressed air cans.

apparently the beeps can indicate what is wrong.

I think different motherboards beep sequences mean diffrent things but if you note the type of motherboard then go to the relevant website there will no doubt be troubleshooting section - may help point you in the right direction.

hope this helps.

I had a motherboard once that had lights on it.. that was pretty cool..

for beeps - now adays.. video card and memory are almost always the cuprits.. hdd, fdd, cdrom.. all those things won't cause your problems.. like the others said.. take those out and put them back in.. and.. check the website like pendejo said..

edit: if you have multiple memory chips.. and not just one.. its probably not memory

thanks guys, I really appreciate the pointers. From what you've said, and Paulie's link's info, I'm betting on the memory stick being knackered (I only have the 1). I've tried replacing the memory with some from a friends PC and instead of beeping I got an error message saying that the memory was unreadable. Problem is my PC is soooo old I'm not sure spare parts will exist. Could be time to dump it, but I can't justify buying a new one right now.

Thanks again. If I get stuck again be assueed I'll shout.
