I have a HP photosmart 3310 all in one printer and have been conversing with Philabibit on some electric schematics and he wanted to see them so I tried to scan to email but it the deamon kicked it back and what it showed was gibberish. The funny thing is I scan to JPEG and it seems to come out ok but the file size is like 20 megs each for two pages, 40 megs to transmit two hand drawn pages. Anyone know how to scan a hand drawn page and successfully email it as an attachment?

I think I just screwed up the email address. Sent it a second time.
Did you get two pages? Were they drawings or did it come out as jibberish?

Most of the time peope use the default settings which are too high for a simple schematic. You're probably scanning over 1200 dpi and you only need to scan around 150 dpi. 300 dpi is even magazine quality.

You could scan it to a file, then reduce the size / quality to an acceptable file size using some imaging software. You should also be able to scan it in lower quality right away even when not scanning to email.

I finally just did HP's thing that says scan direct to email, it went from 40 megs to about one meg. Not sure why. I am still waiting from phlab to see if he can actually read it. Like the differance between a photo and a fax looks like. If it works, its a neat feature, it scans and automatically calls up outlook express (or just outlook, your choice) and sticks the file in the attachment block. Couldn't be simpler, assuming it works and is readable on the other end.

I got the 2 scans last night, and printed them out this afternoon. It doesn't look like I'll have any trouble reading them. I've got a few friends over and we're going to pass them around and see if we can put the thing together. I've got access here to all sorts of electrical and such, and with luck there are some bearings around.

It will be some time, but I hope to make one. Lord knows where are enough aluminum cans around for the job.

Nah, seriously, it's a gadget I invented, terribly unuseful which gives it its charm๐Ÿ™‚ I do this Mr. Wizard thing in our local grade school science class to interest kids in science and one of my gadgets was just this thingy that popped a large ball bearing (1/2 inch, 12 mm or so) up and down as long as I keep power applied. My deal was to make science goodies out of common household objects, which this was partially. I took two paper plates and a toilet paper inner roll cut down to about an inch or so long and cut holes in the paper plates in the center of each and put them about 1/2 apart glued to the toilet roll.
So then I wound a bunch of magnet wire, (18 gauge with varnish insulation), about three inches wide and that 1/2 inch thick. Then made a couple of contacts out of a Dr Pepper soda can placed under the magnet, and a plastic tube that went around the toilet roll, the little bit left sticking up, glued that and then found out later could not use the dr pepper can contacts directly but fed those with wires to a 110VAC relay and then plugged it in and now its waiting for a ball bearing to be dropped inside. Well there happen to be about 5 or 6 kids in the dining room where I was assembling the thing and when I hit the power, BLAM, the ball bearing came out like a rocket and whacked right into the ceiling! Worked a WHOLE lot better than I supposed! If we had been looking straight down the tube.....
Anyway, I regrouped and drug out my trusty old Variac (Google it)
and brought the voltage on the coil down to about 12 VAC or so, had to do that emperically since I had no idea what voltage to use, but found 12 volts worked ok for my little rig. Then what happens is the bearing shoots up about 5 or 6 inches still inside the plastic tube, falls back down, completes the contacts underneath to the soda can contactors and wham, another shot up. The interesting thing I noted was it isn't reguilar like clockwork because of some sideways motion the ball bearing makes when it hits the soda can contacts, it takes some little bit of time to roll down to where it actually makes contact and that time delay is variable so it's really a demonstration of chaotic action also, a side effect of my original vision. Actually my original original vision was to have some kind of cotact that way but to have the BB go in a circular path inside a transparent donut shaped container but couldn't get it together to do that ATT. I am going to try to do it that way for the next trip to the school. The whole point was to attract the kids attention while I set up the rest of my junk.
