Today is a sad day in this family. My wife's nephew was using heroin, went into a coma on Sunday night, only found and taken to hospital Monday evening and today was declared brain dead. They switched off life support this morning to let nature take its course. I feel a pillow over the face is a better idea, but anyway, he's just 25 and was in a decent job. He'll die, probably of starvation.
My question is about the usage of heroin among the youth. How prevalent is it? I thought heroin was so yesterday and the youth today were into other more fashionable drugs. In this country drugs are readily obtainable in the night club scene, so access is not an issue. As I say, I thought it was yesterday's drug, but now I think otherwise, because I just found out that my much younger cousin has just come out of four-week rehab for heroin addiction. Has it come back in fashion? Don't these kids know what a killer it is?
Originally posted by buffalobillI don't think anybody I know takes heroin. Pot is about as far as it goes... I mean, I couldn't say for sure, but at least among my group of friends, hard drugs are out.

Sorry about your wife's nephew though.... π
A sad day indeed. Unfortunately, heroin is very prevelant among younger users. Many will feel adventureous and try it out only to become addicted after a few tries. Some are able to maintain their addiction for a long time unbeknownst to others. Its dangerous stuff, very addictive espicially if smoked.

1)Heroin is not very "prevalent",the prevalent drug amongst people of all ages is cocaine.
2)Smoking heroine is far less addictive than sniffing it or igniting it.
Originally posted by buffalobillAs far as I am concerned it is certainly not prevalent in today's youth, at least not in London. I hang out in circles where pot smoking is regular as well as some other drugs, but never heroin. Anyone who I speak to, even harded drug users, won't go near heroin. As far as I'm concerned it is by far and away the worst drug "on the market". From what I can see you really need to be wanting to try heroin to get involved in it, it's not a case of it finding you, more of you finding it. I'm sure I could walk into my local area and find heroin within 10 minutes, but I don't want to and don't know anyone my age who would want to either.

Originally posted by angie88I know a lot more about heroin than I did a week ago. You can snort it or smoke it (not very efficient) or inject it. I reckon you could also make suppositories to get it into the bloodstream pretty quickly with no needle marks.

Heroin is popular in my area. I'm not sure why, but it started coming into vogue with younger people about five years ago. It's almost as if no one ever told these kids that there are different consequences to using heroin than smoking pot. Many parents preach such a hard line about any drug use that the kids fail to see the distinction between hard and soft drugs. It killed a dear friend of mine two months ago. He was twenty two.

The number one killer of youth around here is quickly becoming crystal meth.. It's cheap and it's potent. Herion is still around although not too many younger people around here get into it. It's mainly pot, cocaine, extasy and now crystal meth. There was a new law passed here recently allowing parents to forcably put their kids into rehab if drugs is a problem or issue. Before this law it was immpossible without the persons consent. And not too many kids with drug problems will consent to rehab. I think it's a small step in the right direction. I don't believe the drugs are the problem, it's the pain that some people feel and are trying to escape that needs to be addressed. We have become such an isolated society with everyone out for themselves. The focus on material success is not providing youth with the inner peace they're longing for. I think it's a tragic loss for your family. I'm truly sorry.
Sorry about your wife's nephew. A friend of mine married a girl last year who was supposed to be a recovering heroin addict. But she kept relapsing and relapsing...
You know those credit cards they send you in the mail that are pre-approved? Well, come to find out she got hold of 3 of them - maxed them all out! She bought lots of stuff with them and sold the items anywhere from $.50 cents to $.10 cents on the dollar! π
The collection agencies are all over him and he says his weekly check only covers the interest on what he owes! :'(
I asked him why he doesn't dump his wife (cause she still won't quit) and he said he was disappointed in me. That he thought I would be more understanding! <GASP>
I think the person who is really sick here is the one who doesn't realize he has a problem. What's your take on this bizzare situation??

It is made with many over-the-counter drugs and many states have made laws limiting the amount of pseudifid you can get. It is so powerful because the high is so long (days) and the low is reported to be an extreme low, thus immediate addiction is guaranteed.

One of the most interesting consequences of this drug is how it physically ages you. When you see before and after pictures of these people it is truly sad. A 30 year old person can look 80 in a matter of months. It is irreversible.
Originally posted by kirksey957My personal experience with crystal meth has been through my step brother. When kids buy a little pot these days they get a freebie of meth. Just once is enough to make you come back for more. My step brother was picked up by police and deemed a danger to himself and society and sent to a mental institution. The doctor told his parents not to hold out any hope and that his mental condition might be permanent. He was paranoid beyond belief and actually believed that the war in Iraq was a direct result of some information he was privy to and that bikers were out to kill his whole family ect. He's better now but on medication for the rest of his life. It took months for him to detox and recover mentally. It's a constent concern within the family if he'll be alright long term.

Another young girl died here last winter after taking a hit of extasy. After coming home late at night and intoxicated her father argued with her. She ran out of the house in -30C weather without a jacket. He went looking for her but could not find her anywhere. She was face down in a snowbank and died from exposure to the cold. She ws only 19 yrs old.
Educating kids on drugs and the dangers are simply not enough. The emotional developement of these kids needs to be addressed as well. I fear what will be available to my kids when they get on the social scene.
And most of these drugs are being administered unknowingly as well, being slipped into drinks ect. I know a woman who was druged while out in a club one night. Ended up in the emergency room at the hospital. I no longer drink anything out of an open rimmed glass while out and never ever let my drink out of my hands. Sad state of affairs.
