I am very curious after looking at the banned players and some of them are very high rated players and then looking at the Top players that are not banned how can you tell that the players who currently in Top 10 spots are not cheating by using chess engins?and how was it found out that the banned high rated players used engins?

please help me to understand,i am at a loss with words.

we have super efficient secret chess police who analyse the games of the top players and decide if they are using engines or not. nobody knows who they are. they are answerable to no-one. maybe it's your opponent, or your clan leader, or just someone you're conversing with on the forums. you never know. then one night, around midnight, there's a knock at the door...

and it's just girl-guides looking for trouble. They explain that they need their 'foiled active trouble' badge and wondered if you knew of anything that needed foiling. You answer in the negative and return back to your comfortable bed when suddenly....

Don't listen to these morons.

If a player is suspected of using a chess engine then the person who suspects them usually supplies some data to back up their suspicion to the game moderation team.

The team (usually) has a very long list of players who are under investigation, and investigation takes up a lot of their time. They are not paid for this service.

You can view the team by clicking on the Site Map link at the bottom of any page on this site, then under Community, click on Volunteers.

Some of them are obvious. They only play against a very particular set of players and keep winning after one or two moves. Or have a sudden meteoric rise in their rating (like if I was suddenly beating people rated 1600.)
The rest are just run out of town in a witch-hunt-like manner due to personal offences and rampant envy. 😉

Edit - It took me so long to try and type this between work that it would have been the first reply, and now its so far down the list that its not even funny anymore. 😕

Just some observations….

I have played postal chess for one of the leading postal organizations in the US for many years, and, as far as I know, nobody there has been banned for cheating. Most of the top players are well-known and have been around a long time, many before computers. Many are also OTB players. Cheating just does not seem to be a problem there. Two years ago I started Internet play. I have only played a couple of friends here but am a sub at another site. At the other site I have not yet seen any cheating accusations or anybody banned for engine use. I don’t know why it seems to be such a problem here. If I were a master I would not sub here for two reasons. First, I would not want to start at 1200 and slog through 100 games against low rated players to get to my level. Many sites allow you to set your initial rating at whatever you want. Second, I see too many cheating accusations and banned players here. It would make me nervous.

There was a well-known cheat here who is now resident at another site, in the top spot I believe.

Undoubtedly others, too.

EDIT: There was a well known cheat here - banned long ago.

That's interesting, since I know someone in the USCF and he tells me many top players have a problem with the fact that many of the players run engines and the USCF doesn't check for it or even seem to care. Many have admitted to having their computer run days on a position.

Also, this other chess site doesn’t have a forum… so there is no place for people to go and complain about cheaters. It's not cheating unless someone makes a rule. Here at RHP, you match a computer over and over... you get run. No human is going to do that.

I don't play at the USCF site because it IS a problem there, and you are right...they don't take it seriously which is why I quit playing there years ago. I personally know one player who has never been rated over 1500 in his life and was rated around 2100 with the USCF postal, but I don't think he plays any more. I play for ther CCLA. They don't have a forum and very limited e-mail tmts., but contact with club officers is only an e-mail away. The couple times I've e-mailed them on other matters, they have responded promptly. Anyway, they have a very small (compared to others) organization.

you hear a strange banging noise coming from your computer. Gingerly you creep up the stairs and into your study. Red Hot Pawn is running but you suddenly notice all is not quite as it should be ....

See Thread 52830. A friend won't join alledgedly because of this possibility and from what people have posted in this thread I can symphasise with him.

I understand the ICCA allows the use of chess engines so cheating is not an issue. Also some other sites allow it. RHP does not.

there is also the very real threat of low rated players cheating, they do not play a single move themselves however have poor chess software
