Hope..... what is it?

Hope is the Thing with Feathers

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Your thoughts?[/b]
How do you reconcile the concept of hope with your "objective recognition and grasp of ultimate reality"?

For me, Hope was a cute chick I've met once in South Padre Island, Tx.

It was a spring break and my homies and I were hanging around the
beach, just chillin' ya know. Close to our sunbathing-boozing camp there
was a bunch of gringas of around our age, amongst whom there was
this Hope bird, a freckled redhead from Wichita who had the most uncool
yellow, grandma bikini I've ever seen -yet that made her cuter in my eyes.
We approached the flock and we talked them in to enjoy some brunette,
male Latino company for the evening, my pals pairing up with the hotties
and me, left to settle for whatever, ended up chatting with Hope. She was
a philatelist and a piano player, Baptist to the bone and convinced that
I was not a good Christian since I boozed and smoked.

Nice gal she was. That night I boozed her up to the ears and discovered that my
back could not heal quickly from scratches.

She left me chlamydia as a souvenir. Hope was her name.

On at least two levels: (1) Integration. The word 'hope' used to communicate absolute confidence in the substance and source of what is grasped/understood/believed (as opposed to its common weaker usage, 'Well I really don't know but sure hope so.'๐Ÿ˜‰. Example might be a soon to be bride's bedrock confidence in her soon to be husband, a reciprocal confidence. (2) Anticipation: Ultimate reality embraces the past as well as the present and future. Example might be the betrothed couple (both of whom recognize the correctness of their mutual decision) eagerly looking forward to their wedding and life together.

Edit: 'Elpis' in both ancient Greek Mythology and koine: absolute confidence

with the expectation of favorable results... the personification of hope.

Enjoyed being on Padre Island twice, though not during spring break.

By the way, you still smoke or did you meet Hope before you 'quit'?

Street slang/cyberspeak dictionary (with monthly updates) would be helpful.

Among other things, hope is a wish or desire for the future. Doesn't determinism (ultimate reality)
dismiss the concept of hope as futile and pointless? The future is written, according to this doctrine,
and no amount of wishful thinking can change it.

Do you think the Belle of Amherst was misguided when she described hope as a bird perching in
the soul and singing without pause?

I hope not.

Not quite sure I'm following your questions, Andy. Please restate them for me. Thanks.

Do you think Dickinson's poem is inspirational or unfounded optimism?
