I think you are side stepping my point. How do you reconcile, 'few white Brits' with the fact that a whole council votes unanimously and a city creates museums to make sure the past is not forgotten?

The point is that you are lumping all white Brits together and minimising the numbers who might think differently. That sounds to me like the rhetoric that perpetuates racism rather than learning from the past.
