I don't indiscriminately correct mistakes; I seldom correct people who seem to be dyslexic, while I will almost always correct people like Xanthos or Bowmann if I find a mistake. One of the positive side effects of correcting others is that it makes it more likely that they will do the same in return.
I find it hard to believe otherwise. Your way of correcting mistakes is in no way friendly, not in my eyes at least, so to claim that it is for the benefit of the corrected one...well...it's hard to believe.

Originally posted by PalynkaI never said otherwise. I don't know where you got the "to claim that it is for the benefit of the corrected one" from. However, I do believe it would be beneficial for every poster to do their best to write correctly. And if someone isn't doing that, it may be beneficial to point it out because xe may not be aware that it makes communication more difficult.
I can believe that, though.
By the way, personally I have definitely benifited from corrections by other people both of my own and other people's posts, so I am grateful that some people are doing it. I have learned quite a lot since I joined the forums.
Nordlys I can see why you might have difficulty with the way some people misspell words. It could get out of hand here very easy. And if we all try to improve, it makes it easier for those who speak other languages to understand. I find that your personality is probably the perfectionist type. To myself and many others we see perfectionism as a good thing but at times very annoying. While I don't really know what it is like to speak many languages as you do. I would think you might read in one language but translate to another. I am not sure how that works in your mind. It might be a little tricky, I don't know. Many of us are lazy and take short cuts when we write. And probably we shouldn't. As fast a these posts go. It can make it difficult to look up every word we haven't got quite right. We are in hopes that someone can figure it out in their mind and understand it. What happens though is that instead of someone commenting on the content of the message that the writer has worked hard on. There is a back and forth spamming about the spelling. That is very annoying. You might think it is funny. But most just move on and ignore it because there are better things we would like to read and comment about. Correcting peoples spelling constantly is as painful to many of us as a hug is to you. We don't go up and hug you just because we know you don't like it. Hoping that it will make it better for you. So maybe you could relax your spelling corrections just a little bit. I know you are not so selfish as to think only of your own feelings. Now I don't personally mind a correction on occasion. I am working hard to try and improve. But I do have some difficulties.
Originally posted by cashthetrashThanks for your thoughtful reply. Well, I have looked through my last 150 posts, and they contained three spelling corrections. One was the one in this thread, which was more to make a point than to correct the spelling - bub said she can spell, but can't be bothered, and I find that quite disrespectful towards the readers (plus doing herself a disservice, as I have explained before). I don't expect people to look up every word they are not certain about (even if I do it myself), but unless she is lying about her spelling abilities, that's not what we are talking about here. I see it as common courtesy to spell out every letter and correct typos you notice. It may take an extra second to do so, but I think you owe the reader that extra second.

The second correction was for a mistake made by Bowmann who corrects people himself all the time. I don't think he minds if I do the same to him. If he does, he should stop correcting people. The third one was in the Word Association thread, which is basically about playing with words, so it seems to be an appropriate place to do it. I believe you would have to search quite long to find a post where I disregard the content a meaningful post the writer has worked hard on and correct the spelling instead. As I said, I don't correct people indiscriminately. And I hold myself back most of the time.

No, I don't usually translate. When I read something in English, I think in English, too.
Originally posted by NordlysI've often wondered about that.

I've also often wondered if widget translates other people's posts into gibberish to understand them, or does does he also have the ability to think, if not write, in english.

Originally posted by NordlysI guess it just seems like it is more often than it really is because you make so many posts. π By the way I like your new icon. Very funny and true. I don't know about Bub. Maybe she can spell and maybe she can't. She may need help (dislexcia) or maybe she is lazy. I can usually figure her out though. It would be nice if she could compromise just a little bit. Give her week, and if she doesn't come around after the tounge lashing I gave you. Pm me and we will get together and nail her to a tree. Either way. I know you are not as bad as some others. I admit I am guilty from time to time. I absolutly love to give XanthosNZ fits anytime I can. But I kind of think he likes it. Nordlys I think you are the coolest. Have fun friend.
