If the Beatles had stayed together long enough to start jamming with Led, they would have eventually stumlbed across what Gomez has been doing since they started.
I think they have completely blown up, but the Matthew Good Band is worth a listen, as well.
He's not a band, but certainly records with one, Bruce Cockburn is difficult to beat as a singer/songwriter.
Pure pop, try Wes Cunningham.
