I will second BB's recommendation of [b]Gomez.
If the Beatles had stayed together long enough to start jamming with Led, they would have eventually stumlbed across what Gomez has been doing since they started.

I think they have completely blown up, but the Matthew Good Band is worth a listen, as well.

Gomez is still very much around, but their latest "In our Gun" was too balladish and anthemic for my liking. Pick of their albums so far is "Liquid Skin".
I like your Zed/Beatles analogy, There's a lot of influences in that band. But still original.

I'll second the Gomez recomendation. Broken Social Scene too. Brazilian Girls are also very good. If you like Zappa, you may also want to check out Primus.

Another great site for finding new music (similar to the one XNZ recommended): www.last.fm

The best site for great music is Progarchives.com
and go to the progressive metal bands
they are the best bands
theyve only left out a couple great bands like dragonforce and stratovarius
but other than that the bands there are the best

I don't suppose you'd know who the "Russian Leonard Cohen" is? I once heard an awesome album by a gravelly Russian singer described in those terms...I recall no details except perhaps his name begins with V.

Theme songs? What are you talking about?

And listening to progressive metal is like drilling your own sinuses out with a coat hanger.

Isn't Gomez like a cross between the Verve and Radiohead watered down for easy pop culture digestion?
