I have windows xp - my pc got sent away to be repaired last week - and it has come back mute.

How can I get the sound back?

Thank you in advance.

Have you tried retracing your steps?

I don't have XP so the following may be no use.

Do you have a wee speaker in the bottom right of your screen? If that is surrounded by a wee red circle, then your computer is muted. You need to double click it and "unmute all".

Are the sound cables plugged in correctly? Its normally fairly easy to figure as there should be colour coordination between the wires and the holes.

I can't really help you to find out if your hardware is no longer working, as I don't know the steps in XP.

setting - control panel - sound and multimedia (I think) there is a scoll bar at the bottom of the screen

or there might be a little speaker icon at the bottom right of screen which you need to double click

IF the mute all button doesn't work here are some more obvious steps
1 Make sure your volume isn't turned all the way down. In both the control panel and your application.
2. Make sure your speakers are plugged in.
3. Make sure your speakers have power (if applicable)
4. Make sure your speakers have the volume turned up.
5. Reinstall applicable drivers.

Alternativly just send it back to the people who did the repair and complain.

I have a feeling it is because I complained that the repair people deliberately sabotaged my PC by taking the sound away.

In my control panel,: "sounds and audio devices" have high volume and no mute button ticked.

I have built in speakers into the lap top, is there a place where these might be secretly controllable?

There is are function keys in your f7 and f8 (I think)

Use the function button (bottom left) and click the appropriate f key.

Yes, some laptops have an external mute or volume switch. CHeck that.

If that does not work, did you give the repairpeople the original re-install CDa ? not just the Win XP ? The drivers for the sound may be missing.

As a last resort go into the BIOS Setup. To do this look at the screen carefully while the computer starts to boot. There should be a message to press DEL or F1 to get into the BIOS. In the BIOS check all the options to see if there is one that disables sound.

DO NOT MAKE ANY OTHER CHANGES IN THE BIOS.
If you think you have made incorrect changes in the BIOS, you can close it WITHOUT SAVING. Be Careful !

Thank you everyone.

I've decided to phone the repair people tomorrow. I have a huge fear about handing it over as they just had it for a week in their works unit after fixing it last wednesday.

This PC has the whole of my companies accounts on, and as yet not uploaded website. I would prefer to have a dumb computer, rather than deal with those dumb idiots.

Does the media player play the song [or whatever it is] with just the sound missing?
Do you get the windows sounds?

In Sounds & Audio Devices/Audio Tab/see if it has your sound device in the drop down menu [for playback]
If they're greyed out you will have to reinstall the drivers, either from the system cd or at the manufacturers website..
As mentioned above.

Switch thingy isn't usually installed on minimal lap top installations of XP stew pied!
Here's a good diagnostic tool to see if it's your application or settings that's at fault
Click start > programs > accessories > system tools > system information

Then in the top left of the box that opens click on tools > direct X diagnostic tool

Click on the sound tab and click on test sound.
