i thought i had smoking beat. i quite back in november. i used the gum for about a month and stopped after i lost the cravings. everything was going great. up to that point i never had got drunk yet. well then i made some cool friends and started going out with them now and again (they dont smoke). 3 weeks ago i went to the bar and i had a great night! except for one thing, i was drunk i was having fun but then i started craving cigarettes badly. once i started smoking again i couldn't stop! i smoked at least 10 cigarettes that night. well i the same thing happened last weekend. and i plan to go out this weekend and i know ill be smoking again tonight.

i didn't realize that drinking and smoking go hand in hand! this kinda sucks because before long i'll be smoking again on a regular basis.

is their anyway to prevent this? i also read on a box of nicorette gum that you shouldn't use the product if you've quite using nicorette for 2-6 months. because for a while i was thinking id just bring some nicorette with me when i go out.

have any of you past smokers experinced what im going through? how did you deal with drinking and not smoking? any tips to remain cigarette free while drinking?

It's much tougher to quit smoking while you're still drinking, but don't try to give up both at the same time. Quit drinking first.. give yourself some time to stabilize.. then zero in on the cigarettes. You'll be a double winner.

try a pipe. the process of setting it up..relighting it....taking a small puff now and then...cleaning it out, etc....will give you both the process
of the smoking procedure and will produce less smoke for you to inhale. this is if you wish to or need to have some smoking. also i would recommend that if you wish to socialize in a drinking atmosphere you should try a small glass of wine and hold your evening to two of them. anything in moderation is ok for you. an edit: if you are going out to purchase a pipe just go to the drugstore and get a $3.00 corn cob that uses the dr. grabow paper filter insert.
they don't need breaking in as do expensive pipes and the filter can be easily changed every day. i would recommend an ordinary pouch of half and half tobacco. any good drugstore will have all three items.
and oh, yes..get a small box of wooden matches. a gentlemen does
not light a pipe with a paper match or a lighter. it should cost you about $10.00 to for whole tryout. puff lightly ( easy small breath inward ) so as to both not draw in much smoke and to not heat the ash too hot. a light puff now and then will be fine. pipes quite often go out so a relight half way thru is quite common.

I gave up in Jan last year. A handy piece of advice I was told was not to worry if one night I smoked (for the same reasons as you frankly, I used to run a Pub for a living), just don't smoke now.

I dunno if you can train yourself like this but I honestly thought it can't be difficult ( I smoked for about 17 years), just don't have one. The first day for me was terrible, I was talking to myself non-stop, it was a bit weird. It got much easier very quickly though.

I can still tell within myself something's different, I'm not sure it will ever disappear, but I guess that's a part of me now....
I can go for a drive somewhere nice, get out and pat my pockets to find my Baccy, oh yeah I don't smoke anymore!

I feel much better for it though mate, really.

It's worth the grief, all the best.

Edit: You'll need to make a real effort the once while out on the lash not to smoke, I'd guess after that you'd find it much easier. I'm afraid that you'll have to just do it. It's not easy obviously but well worth it.

Well my mum is a heavy smoker, and the only way she could cut down from 60 to 10 a day is by quitting drinking. It makes a big difference on your behavior with smoking.

The funny thing is, I'm smoking right now... I shouldn't comment!

I fear that you have experienced the difference between becoming a non-smoker when you quit, and becoming a smoker who isn't smoking. A non-smoker will not put a cigarette in his mouth no matter what happens, but a smoker who isn't smoking might go for ten years, and then something happens, like attending the funeral of his best friend, or in your case a night out drinking and enjoying friends, and suddenly back comes the tobacco. The only advice I could give you is to become a non-smoker, and that advice is not very helpful unless you can see it for yourself. All I can say is don't let your experience convince you that you can't beat smoking, because you certainly can. I feel for you, and wish you luck.

Again, the best advice I can offer is to stop drinking if you want to kick the cigarette habit. There is definitely a chemical link between nicotine and alcohol. One enhances the effects of the other.

Ask your doctor.

I think you're dead right.

I never ever in the last 25 years of smoking ever thought I would or could stop. I haven't ever really commited to trying either.

I gave up alcohol 5 months ago now, but continued to smoke. I decided, for the good sake of myself and my good lady, that I would quit smoking New Year's eve and I did. I just stopped and said to myself 'that's it, for your lady, yourself and for health - 2009 you do not smoke'..... I haven't had one for 19 days and I doubt I will again.... I still get a tinge of a muscular craving in my throat, but physically I do not need them and mentally I have beaten them. I never ever thought of all people I would stop (40 a day up til Nov) - in 25 years I never went more than 8 hours without a cig before NY Eve.

I know one thing though. If I were drinking - there is no way on this planet I could or would have ever stopped. Listen to Andy. If you seriously want to stop smoking - then stop the benders and the getting out of control or you'll be waking with cigs in your pocket everyday again.

It takes at least two years for the cravings to subside. Quit the cigs immediately but don't beat yourself up for the occasional cig over the course of the next couple of years. Just make it a truly rare event. You'll still be much better off than saying f*** it and giving in to the old habit.

quitting smoking is easy. Finding the self-discipline within yourself to not stick one in your mouth is the hard part.

You have to want to quit smoking. You obviously really don't want to quit.

You need a reason to quit. Go to the cancer ward of your local hospital and hang out with some of the smokers who are dying of cancer and other respiratory illnesses. Become friends with some of them. Then, when they die you'll feel the loss of life and maybe, just maybe, you'll see how idiotic you are behaving.
