Ok, this might be a little long winded but I think I am following what you mean.
"Don't" should come with obvious things like "don't" touch hot things, "don't" steal, "don't" hit (thought they do anyway, lol), "don't" cheat, "don't" be an A-hole.
With my kids, and their dad was always on the same parenting page, we were realists with them. We treated ...[text shortened]... ct a dollar for that day, and they get right up and do them.
I have a teenager who wants to be an astronaut. I tell him that he needs to work hard for it, starting NOW! He has the opportunity to go into one of the Air Force auxillary programs here (they start at 13 years old) and he knows that would help him get into the Air Force Academy or even just Air National Guard at a University. That is not the only option but it is definitely a good option to get to his end goal. He's still thinking about it.
I think it is important to help open opportunity for your kids to get to their goal or at least talk to them about how they can get there.
