I am currently using Norton which seems to leaves my internet running quite slow (processor "ccapp"?? 21K).

Anyone know of any decent FREE security downloads out there?

I will be taking Norton off as soon as possible!

Are you sure it's Norton's fault? I run the latest version of Norton and I have no problems with internet speed.

My experience with free internet security programs has not been good. They have either been ineffective or have slowed my PC down considerably. However the names of the programs escape me at the moment...

As others have said. AVG. Easy to install. Doesn't use much memory and is FREE!

I use windows live onecare....it's not free though, i'm afraid......are you a student, or just a cheapskate ?

The first thing you need is a firewall.
You might already have one, if you use a router (eh wireless) from your DSL connection.
Do Start - Run, type "cmd" and hit Enter.
A black window with white text will appear.
Now type "ipconfig" and hit Enter.
If your IP Address start 192.168.x.x., you have a Firewall...and just about the best one at that (http://www.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm).

Anti-Virus...AVG is a great product....go with the recommendation.

Anti-Spam....use gmail and similar facilities to filter it for you...then draw the wanted emails from gmail to your local email client.

Anti-Spyware...Windows Defender is free, but it has limitations...in fact, they all do.....but be careful with this one, there are many "products" out there that claim to clear you up, but actually infect you...if they offer an online scan, avoid them.
For the most part though, if you aren't visiting "naughty", Spyware is a lesser concern.

Virus scanner----AVG
Spyware --------Ad-Aware
Firewall---------XP/Vista has a free one or use a router
Email ----------anything other than Outlook

This will protect you from most stuff for free.

i threw my last computer against my neighbours wall because of norton.

lost head - unplugged everything - walked outside - throw - split

they where pissed.

I currently use McAfee (not free) but I don't intend to renew because of the BT internet connection I use I am entitled to Norton free from BT are you saying it is no good? Does anyone else think Norton is inadequate?
