My hard drive got nuked.😞 All my songs were on there. I was wondering if I could copy the songs on my iPod back to my PC, and if when i reinstall my iPod, will it delete my songs? Thx

I had an iPod before a PC, therefore had to copy my files from iPod to PC. I used a little application called The Godfather. It's tricky to used, but once you've got it working it's brilliant.

I was also able to retain all my ratings and "Number of Times Played" fields, which was important to me due to my playlists. If you're interested in retaining this information then let me know and I'll add more to this thread.

There is an option on the iPod that you need to set through iTunes, it's called "Enable Disk Use", this'll need to be ticked. If you were to plug your iPod into someone else's machine, then you'll get a question "Do you want to synchronise this iPod with this computer", if you select NO, then you'll be able set the "Enable Disk use" to the correct setting. I don't know what will happen if you plug your iPod into your restored computer. I don't know exactly which piece of information the computer uses to recognise which iPod is synchronised with it, and whether or not this information would be retained between a restore.
Then you can open up "My Computer" and open up your iPod. There is a hidden folder called ipod_control, make this visible. You can then copy out all of the files from here. The only problem with this is that all your files will be in directories called F00, F01, F02,....., F49, and the files will have names such as WCXT4.mp3, etc. If you want to restore the file names and directory names then you'll need use something like The Godfather. You don't HAVE to do that, but some people like to access their music through the directory structure, rather than through iTunes.

Originally posted by Falco LombardiYeah that will work so long as you have previously ticked "Enable Disk Use". There is a simple question that will answer this.

Q) When you previously synchronised your iTunes and iPod, did you have to manually eject the iPod, or did the big red stop sign disappear automatically once the synchronisation had finished?
If you had to manually eject then disk use is enabled, this means you'll be able to easilly access your files through My Computer.
If the iPod ejected itself automatically then you'll need to enable disk use before you can get at the files through My Computer. You'll need to look at the previous posts to see how to do this.

it might not help with the iPod songs (not sure how strict Apple is on digital rights protection), but it might help backing up other files before reinstalling windows.
OK, I had a thought about your problem. Here are the steps that you need to follow to restore your PC with music.
1) Fix your computer!! but DO NOT install iTunes. (This may not be necessary, but it's useful as a precaution against iTunes automatically synchronising with your iPod and deleing all your music.
2) Put your iPod into "Disk Mode". follow the instructions on this web page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
3) Connect the iPod to your computer.
4) Go to my computer and you'll be able to access your iPod. You may need to show hidden files because the directory that you're after is hidden, and called iPod_Control, within here there is a directory called Music, copy everything to your Music directory on your PC.
5) Install iTunes and then get iTunes to look at this directory.
It's possible that you may have some ID information from some of your files. I don't know why this happens, but I guess that you should suck it and see....
