Some people say Pink Floyd is the greatest; others Black Sabbath; still others Green Day. Well, too bad. Jimi Hendrix is freaking AWESOME!!! Those of you with iTunes, buy 'Fire', 'All Along the Watchtower', and 'Little Wing' by Jimi Hendrix. He is the best!!!
Holy hell...
What next? The Spice Girls?

Hendix was the greatest rock guitarist of them all. I can't agree that he started rock guitar, however. Even ignoring the blues axmen that proceeded the 60's rock and roll stars, which you really can't, you still had guys like Duane Eddy and Link Wray before him. Also The Ventures and hell, Beck, Clapton and Page were all in The Yardbirds and all came before Hendrix.
but Jimi was the best i think. but Clapton, Page, Gilmour were all greats...

As guitarist?
I think I've heard Flamenco players who were better than any other guitarist I've ever heard.

Marc Bolan made love to his guitar on stage...if that isn't organic, I don't know what is!
Originally posted by shavixmiryou're not going to start another 'i love Marc Bolan' bit are you? I mean, i think The Slider is one of the all-time great albums, and bits of Electric Warrior were hot, but he put out a lot of mediocre stuff too. anyway, Mick Ronson went down on Bowie's guitar, so that's one better i reckon.
Oh come!

to clarify my tastes in guitar, i should add that i'm an overload/distortion/feedback freak...

There's a Red House over yonder, baby
That's where my baby stays
Well, I ain't been home to see my baby,
in ninety nine and one half days.
'Bout time I see her,
Wait a minute something's wrong here
The key won't unlock the door.

wasn't jimi pages' stint in the yardbirds after hendrix though? and to be fair, the yardbirds were kinda poppy-blues, not rock. surely beck's big rock influence came with truth, which was after hendrix too?
however, we can argue about the founding fathers of rock guitar for a long, long time. however, how many 15 year old guitarists have heard of link wra ...[text shortened]... ast one of them have heard of jimi hendrix. plus, link wray didn't set his guitar on fire...
The Yardbirds were very influential as a early 60's blues/rock band. They were among the first to try things with guitar and amps that hendrix later realized the potential of.
Let the young fellow here the names. When I first got into jazz, I had to read, experiment and listen.
Robet Gordon did an album in the late 70's with Link Wray that's a lot of fun to listen to.
