Because I've heard just about everything he's done and he's never played anything that's close to the intricacies of Steve Vai's technical ability, nor the immense depth of Paco de Lucia's finger-style. If you really don't know who de Lucia and McLoughlin are, then how can you possibly consider your opinion an educated one?
Originally posted by StarrmanI believe it has something to do with it. I am not rushing out to buy much of the technical cr@p. But I have bought almost everything Hendrix recorded. I am not saying that technical ability can't improve talent though. But sometimes it can get in the way too. Jerry Lee Louis had little technical ability. But the Killer didn't let that stop him.
So now fame is a part of how good a guitarist he was?
Of course they're different, that's the point.

Originally posted by StarrmanWell actually I was just about to write that you had it backwards. I was wondering why you wrote it that way. I think I am hearing you say Hendrix had no skill because he was self taught. Baloney. Or how do you guys say it. Bollocks or something like that? Genius is genius. Education is bought. I'll take geniuss any day.

Is Garth Brooks a good guitarist?
I reckon he's probably sold more CDs than Hendrix.
Plus, most of those guys were self-taught.
In fact, name me a decent rock guitarist who isn't self taught?

Steve Vai is not completely self taught. He was taught by some of the greatest. But he has talent as well as Technical skill. He wasn't doing much during the Hendrix years. He is pretty good though. Nothing ground breaking though.
