Steve Vai is not completely self taught. He was taught by some of the greatest. But he has talent as well as Technical skill. He wasn't doing much during the Hendrix years. He is pretty good though. Nothing ground breaking though.
Not "some of the greatest". And he was 10 when Hendrix died so I guess he wasn't doing much.
Anyhow, all of this is irrelevant - on pure technical ability Vai is miles ahead of Hendrix. Even on style he is.
Hendrix basically played distorted blues and not much else.

Then perhaps you'd do well to say that instead of asking questoins. Either way it is immaterial to the matter at hand.

This is all dross. How good a guitarist you are depends on two things above and beyond your technical prowess (of which Hendrix was hardly at the top):
1) The style of music you play - There are plenty of Flamenco guitarists that put Hendrix to shame in a straight up comparisson.
2) The band you're in - The songs you write and the framework of instr ...[text shortened]... d, any talk of him being the greatest guitarist in the world is both speculative and redundant.
steve vai may be technically better than hendrix, he may even be a better guitarist*. but hendrix has a legacy that stretches beyond guitars with handles. thus, he is greater.
*as you say-they are different styles, and indeed generations. i, personally, prefer hendrix. or satch, if i had to choose an instrumental guitarist.

Why is it the young ones never think the older ones had a clue? Hendrix was brilliant in all things musical. Case closed.

Some people say Pink Floyd is the greatest; others Black Sabbath; still others Green Day. Well, too bad. Jimi Hendrix is freaking AWESOME!!! Those of you with iTunes, buy 'Fire', 'All Along the Watchtower', and 'Little Wing' by Jimi Hendrix. He is the best!!!
