Your list includes transient users who dropped out years ago, some who made one or two moves just for
the hell of it, then drifted away. How about using the Player Tables, which I believe are reasonably current?

I don't think the OP was bothered about active players.
It is slightly odd that when suddenly faced with choosing a
nik why so many plucked for a name starting with 'S'.

Curious I googled 'Most common nickname' and this is a list
from the top hit. 'S' scores the most with 8 though I only know
one guy (Stretch) who I call by this nick-name.

Bear
Bones
Buck
Chubby
Chuckles
Colonel
Dash
Digger
Doc
Doughboy
Eel
Fats
Giggles
Happy
Hippie
Ice
Keys
Monkey
Pepper
Pokey
Rocky
Sergeant Major
Sharky
Shorty
Smiley
Sparky
Sticky
Stitches
Stretch
Wimpy

Couldn't get any here but they were forced back to work (if that's what you call what "they" do).

It's because in many Western European languages, more words start with "s" than with any other letter. I just did the same thing for my SOED - there are 344 pages of S-words, with P being the next best with 221. In my pocket Italian dictionary, there are 48 pages of S-es, with C being second at 34. In both cases, a significant lead for S over its closest rival. I believe the same thing is true in Dutch, though I haven't counted my Dikke Van Dale.
The reason why S starts so many words is probably that it is so easy to start compound consonants with. You can start words not just with s+vowel, but also str+vowel, sch or sh+vowel, sp+vowel, and so on. Other consonants don't combine nearly so well, at least as a starter. R is good as a second: tr-, pr-, chr- - but you don't see that in the lists. Only the first letter shows in lists, and S is good as a starter.

And the reason that this transfers to names as well? Well, first of all, the same combinations that work in words also work in names; but also, many players choose nicks which aren't even names to begin with, but actual words. As you and I should both know very well, oh hexuagintal one.

(I need to get out more).

You and me both, mate.

You won't like to know, then, that there are three letters with fewer pages in the OED (X, Y and Z), and no fewer than seven in the Italian dictionary (H, J, K, W, and XYZ again).
