I actually reckon it would be cheaper to drive. It's a round trip of 85 miles (which would be about £9 in fuel). Don't think the trains are that cheap, and it will take me a while to get to the station.

No congestion charge on Saturdays (so I'm OK there)
Parking meters are on virtually every allowed area, but they are only controlled within certain hours, so if I find one which isn't within that time I'm perfectly free to park there without charge? Hence looking at St Johns Wood Road.

Not so sure. My grandmother was in charge of a bunch of women during the second world war. For a year she led them on a long trip around the circle line before discovering she could get them to their destination by going one stop in the other direction.
