So all silliness aside, are you saying double clutches are going to be the new automatic transmission?

As for transmissions, how many ever drove 3 on the tree? Do you miss them?

The twin-clutch gearboxes seem to be taking over traditional manual gearboxes, they shift faster and offer comparable control that manuals offer.
Much as i like a good car, i think that one clutch is enough for me, thank you very much. I mean , there's no need....really 😛
Originally posted by rmackenI actually find this rather interesting, and am sorry you don't. One of the more interesting transmissions I've seen in action was a VW Beatle that had a Semiautomatic transmission of sorts in it. It was a good friends older brother's car when I was about 17 and he was around 21.
and this is interesting why?
I don't remember the year of the car, but I saw it around 1984 or 85 and had never seen anything like it. You shifted the stick, just taking the foot off the gas to shift. It revved up in any gear like a standard, but the clutch worked automatic when you let go of the gas.
I actually love the feel of using a clutch, and believe a human can shift better than any program, just like in chess where humans are better than engines when you compare the best.
The computer can automate the shifting we do, but a human will be more creative and get more out of shifting than a computer can. So an excellent driver will be able to shift better and get off the line quicker if they like than any automated system could.

You still shift, but the computer and engine is helping you ram into gear by timing the gears for you.
I've got no problems with this shifting process... Sorry I flamed you Twin Clutch!
