Yes, I know lots of people like to waste their money on gasoline. I like to waste it elsewhere.

Yeah, you need to listen to the RPM levels when you are clutch shifting. You can actually "feel" the sychronizers align and you can ease your stick into the next gear. If you are off a bit on the sychronizers, it will grind, but if you are right on it, it will shift as smoothly as if you had engaged the clutch. I have driven big rigs that way. Make sure the customer doesn't know you if you are experimenting with their cars. LOL
Oh they won't know, they didn't know I was driving their cars when I could barely drive stick, so why should they know that I'm practicing clutch-less shifting on them? 🙂

In a way this makes no sense, since automatics are less gas efficient.

OMG I pwned myself!

Shifting without using the clutch was known as "speed shifting", it is really simple once you get the hang of it. Ease the shifter to the edge of the next gear. Very softly and you will feel the smallest ticking as you are about to enter the gear. Let off on the excellerator a hair and jam it in. As you get better, it gets easier and faster. Soon you will do it without even thinking. Luck.

This is how I drive every day with my manual tranny vehicle.
It saves the clutch plate... The trick is on most transmissions (easy if you've driven an unsynched transmission vehicle like a tractor trailer) is waiting for the 500 Rpm difference. Click out of gear, let flywheel drop revs and it will click in as you say, the opposite for down shifts (throttle up in neutral) Very fun way to stay awake in boring traffic jams.

wouldn't the newer ones be more gas efficient? haven't they got it right, yet?
