i was diagnosed with bi-polar a couple of years ago. for the first 2 years i didn't take meds. but for the last year i have been taking meds. i found that since being on meds my rating has dropped 100 points and i'm not able to play as much chess as i used to. which sucks, but i still enjoy it!
are their any professional, GM's or IM's or just really good chess players who are mentally ill. and do they take meds for their condition and are they able to play at a high level. i'm looking for some inspiration.
i know paul morphy was mentally ill and i think this ruined his chess carrer, no? was he a schizophrenic, i've never heard anyone call him a schizophrenic but some of his attitudes and symptoms sure sound like it?
also if your brave enough i'm just curious if your mentally ill and play chess and whats your rating and wheather a not you take meds or not?

If you want to get better then you need to look at the options available to you. PM me if you are interested in alternatives.

Originally posted by Arrakisa layman 'diagnosing' over internet, hinting on a conspiracy behind medical treatment, and proposing some dogdy 'alternative' treatment to someone with a real problem. very nice.

Well my friend you are not alone on meds. I presently take oxycodone in heavy dosage and vicodin for sudden severe pain. The effects for me are difficulty concentrating and no short term memory worth mentioning. This results in many missed moves. It has cost me many games. This is not meant as an excuse. The people who beat me do so fairly and I have seen unintentional mismoves by players and didn't feel guilty taking advantage of it. I take all skulls as a balancing gesture. I'm not bitter, just need every advantage to try to keep my rating up for my class. Good luck Pal.ππππ΄
