Got into a bad habit. When we get a call anyone in the office can answer, but now everyone lets it ring till i pick the damm thing up.
When I pick up they all want to know who it is and is it for them.
I am being treated like a filter.
What is the strategy for dealing with this sort of abuse of my time?

Choose not to care, and let it ring.

What you should do depends on line of work you're in/what type of office.

Try answering "Hello if you woulds like to make a call please hang up and dial 911".

Then if they call back, try saying "In English press 1, in Español
press 2 for an Operator press 0 or remain on the line". Then lay the phone down. Oh it might help to turn your radio on and play some Mottly Crew loudly in the background. If after about twenty minutes they are still on the line say" there are 200 calls ahead of you please remain on the line or call back latter. It won't take long for your Office workers to catch on and join in on the fun. It works well for bill collectors.

Lie and lie again.

No. Just letting it ring will only serve to let them let it ring, and you will keep being frustrated.

What you want to do is pick up the phone, lie and then lie to the people who the phone is for.

"Good afternoon, this is MI5, who can I pass you to."
"...answer..."
"I will pass you to "...x...."

Then you take on another voice:
"P118V. How can mother be of assistence?"

Then just carry on from there.
If this isn't enough, then start:
"Good afternoon, this is MI5, who can I pass you to."
"...answer..."
"I will pass you to "... name of person who should have picked up the phone:" "

The person on the phone will continue as they started: "Hi, I'm from..y.. and I want to...z..."
And you answer: "Hi, I'm 'name of person who should have picked up the phone' .... uh....eh....uh....hihihihi....uh...."

eventually the people concerned will understand that they should pick up the FFing phone themselves....
