We had been stopping to look at a dead coyote by the side of the road for a week. I have always encouraged my kids to observe the full circle of nature, to understand death as much as they can, and luckily, we are able to do that often here where we live. We have not raised our children with any religion or belief in God, as a side note here, just with the awareness that we, their parents, have atheist and agnostic views and that we must respect the many other views and religions. It's about nothing but the physicality of life, growth and death. The spiritual stuff we decided to leave to them to sort out on their own as they mature and we tell them so.
The coyote was hit by a car, I think, and left on the road next to the beautiful farm adjacent to my neighborhood. When our small pets have died, we have looked them over and poked them before burying them. We stop and look at road kill alot. We stare at dead things a lot when we travel. We don't care about the smell or the rot. It's interesting, and not many people I know get it.
I would love to have my dog's skull after her death, but I doubt that will happen.
I used to have a rabbit head that I found in the forest, almost completely white and clean. I kept it by my kitchen sink for a long time. It was quite a prize to me. Incredibly, I threw it away after my ex-husband complained enough about it.
I have thrown away my own prized drawings, objects, poetry and other items and regretted it deeply.
Tonight I hacked the rotting head off the dead coyote on the side of the road and brought it home. I have always loved animal skulls, in particular, bovine skulls. We have been watching this animal as it was consumed by maggots quickly the past week. It went from fluffy, live-looking, intact, to flattened with bones sticking out in four days. Incredible. My kids watched as I did it, thrilled. I had been contemplating taking the head the entire week.
I will keep this coyote head.
Pics will be available by request 😉.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that some credit goes to my boyfriend, because he knows I love skulls, and encouraged me to take it.

I must admit I also like to look at bones, I have a skull of a vole that I found in the woods and it is pretty cool. My kids and I have found elk bones in the mountains and examined them with interest. These bones were all picked clean.
That said, the thought of hacking the head off a recently killed coyote seems pretty gross. 😞
You must have a high tolerence for gross. 😉

Some say were born into the grave
I feel so alone, gonna end up a
Big ole pile a them bones
Dust rise right on over my time
Empty fossil of the new scene
I feel so alone, gonna wind up a
Big ole pile a them bones
Toll due bad dream come true
I lie dead gone under red sky
I feel so alone, gonna end up a
Big ole pile a them bones

My initial reaction was that this sounds completely psychotic. But on further reflection... ...why not. I suppose it's good that your kids can see the whole circle of life thing. Educational.
I struggle in dealing with discussing death with my daughter. I kind of like your straight-forward approach here.
i live in montana...and hunt at least some species of animal, every day of the year.
wether you believe in God or not doesn't matter, everybody should have experience with death. Especially taking a life. It will change your attitude about it forever, if you have to look into the eyes of something you killed, and then butcher it.
Its the disconnection from this experience that allows people to hate each other so ignorantly, and treat each other so horribly.
thats just my 2 cents.

Originally posted by SunburntWe have the skull and spine of a wild boar (?). I have to admit, I was a little creeped out by it. I found it in the woods, and my son just had to have it. My wife bleached the bones and cleaned it up. I like skulls and stuff, but I have no experience in this area, and I'm a little germophobic. Being in the woods is an uncomfortable experience for me, much less picking up dead animal skeletons.

Sufficient time to rot.
So I am wondering Sunburnt, did you use gloves of some sort?
