I just recieved the first parts for my first PC build.
I got an Nforce 680 sli motherboard, a Q6600 Processor, and a pair of OCZ platinum revision 2 (2 x 1GB) memory.
Here's my question....I plan on going SLI, with 2 BFG 512 MB graphics cards, Is it worth my while increasing the memory ? It's possible now to have a max of 8GB on the board, but i've been told that over half of that would be useless and unrecognised. Would doubling up on the memory be a waste of time ?

if i were you i wouldnt try to get too wrapped up with the build... i would just stick with what you have and see how you go.... if the system runs a little slow, then add the ram
Originally posted by eatmybishopCheers mate. I think i'll probably double while i can. The memory isn't that expensive (£29 for 2GB), and i'd rather do it now than open the machine up later.

You should only use the amount of RAM you need.
That memory takes up system resources and can actually slow your system down.
If you have RAM installed that you are not using then it is a waste of dosh and system resources.
A top quality fast PC needs to be finely tuned (right amount of RAM and over-clocking etc), otherwise it’s like putting a truck engine in a fiesta.
A good rule of thumb, your machine is only going to be as fast as the slowest component, so if your hard drive has a slow speed then the other components will be hanging around.
Forgive me if I am wrong.

(That is what I was taught anyway).
You could always google and find out exactly what RAM is and does.

So your'e saying that 2x2GB would be faster than 4x1GB ?
If you are hoping to install M$ Office then my advice is not worth much.
Sorry.

Keep your hard drive size down to about 20 - 40 gig (anything more is a waste and increases the seek time, read write).
I am a Command and Conquer man myself and have no social life.
(Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz , 2 gig RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX )
I am trying to get a 20 gig hard drive to replace this rubbish 80 gig.
You will be upgrading and swapping things about when the next killer game comes out so get used to tweaking a machine to fit the games.
What OS are you going to use (and will you be ripping the guts out of it)?
Originally posted by WoodgieI have Tiberium wars, and it pains me to say it....i can't get by the round with the mammoth tank (Egypt somewhere). I plan to get big hard drives because my other passion is movies, and the downloading thereof....could i use three, and have one 60GB for games, and 2 biggies for My movies ? That'd work, right ?
