My gut may indeed be odd since, in the 73 years (almost) that I have been on this planet, I have yet (touch wood) had an issue you described and I have ingested some "odd" things. I feel for ya. 🙂

we eat them with gravy because during the 2nd world war and 5 or 6 years later sugar was rationed and lemons impossiible to come by ( after all pancake mix is yorkshire pudding mix, and in our hous my dad would say thems that eat most pudding will get most meat so you stuffed your face with the yorkshires and were to full to eat much meat.

Lemon on pancakes, that just sounds bizarre. Oh, wait, maple trees don't grow in the UK, do they? And I mean the sugar maple, from which we get maple syrup and the leaf of which is featured on the Canadian flag. I guess you have to make do when you don't have proper pancake topping.
