Do people portray themselves in online forums in the same way they really are in their social lives, workplace and at home?

I sure don't. In real life I am a sarcastic jerk.

That was the point. There is no way to give a simple yes or no answer to that question without appearing to be a wife beater.

There is always the meaning of the word beaten. I've beaten my wife...at chess, but then she's even worse at it than I am.

Yes, I know that's what you intended, but it did not come off. Think about it.

Yeah, I wasn't quite sure how I should word that. I probably should have said did you you beat your wife today... nope, that doesn't work either.

It doesn't matter, because FMF actually understood what I was saying this time... strange, but true.

I know, but I couldn't think of another way of saying it without being too graphic... such as have you horsewhipped your wife today, or have you committed domestic violence today. But like I said, he understood what I was asking.

I'm afraid I may be developing an unhealthy fascination with his extraordinary powers of perception and reasoning.

Not so. You asked me if I had beaten my wife and I gave you a simple 'no' answer.

The question you were looking for is "Have you stopped beating your wife?"

I have not beaten my wife either, at least not yet!

Do I get a point? I badly need it, my rating is so low at the moment. 😞

The operative word in the question I asked is "today". Think about it.

Asking Have you stopped beating your wife is too obvious.

Not so. I didn't ask you if you had beaten your wife. I asked you if you had beaten her today.
