Of course churchill was almost certainly a manic depressive and probably said that when he was 'up'. at other times he would have said to himself 'Sod the war, I need a drink.' By all acounts he said that quite often. I guess the slight problem I have with what you are saying is that a depressed person is about as likely to use said candle to heat a small ...[text shortened]... aying that just saying it to a depressed person doesnt make it so. Do you see what I mean?
Yes, and it's a rare and precisely nuanced post focused on abnormal extremes. What about the genuine article, actual inner tranquility of soul?

Why do you suppose so many unhappy people across the world seem to suffer from a serious lack of self esteem and dislike of happy people?
Unhappy people dislike happy people because they see what they could have become if they put forth a little more effort into their own lives.Period.

You seem to suggest a lifetime of vacillating and/or incorrect priorities. If so, why do unhappy people choose to stay with their status quo?

Unhappy people choose to stay with their status quo because that is what they know. If you are afraid to step out of your comfort zone, that is what you will always achieve..status quo.

"... because that is what they know." Okay. What dynamics inhibit their decisions to overcome the darkness and learn what they don't know?

It can be any number of things. Economic pressures can easily force these decisions. If you know that your current standard of living is about to change to the negative, shouldn't that be enough of an impetus (for most people) to step out of that comfort zone to find something new?
Some people just get sick and tired and fed up in their current situations and force a change within themselves.

You've identified external realities that create obstacles and pose challenges. What's your view of internal dynamics that come into play?
