Originally posted by TheMaster37Quite frankly, no. At the situation maybe, but not that the game has been claimed. I knew the rules before I ever started the game, and I have agreed to those rules. That person has every right to time me out the second he gets the chance.
Hypothetically;
You're playing game game, 21 day timeout + 21 day timebank, because you know, that soon you'll have no internet access for a while. It is the finaly of a HUGE clan battle, and the outcome of that game decides the clanmatch. You're rating is 1800+ and was, strangly enough, pitted against a 1200- player.
You're winning, horribly. ...[text shortened]... see it was claimed the second it could be claimed.
You're telling us you wouldn't be upset?
In a real time tournament, where the games are timed, I am playing a spectacular game but time runs out on me. Am I going to go complain to the powers that be that the rule is not fair and it should be changed? Do you think everyone in those real time tournaments are sitting around complaining and discussing how bad the rules are? Though I've never participated in OTB chess, I would think not.

Actually Boris, I just went and checked, and EVERY single one of his timeouts are from tournament games. So in all actuality they all could have been from the auto timeout. And even if they weren't, they probably would have hit the auto timeout before he got back anyway. So there's no one to accuse this time. Sorry.

Yes, you knew the timelimit, but you couldn't keep yourself to that limit because of things you don't control...that is what i usually don't like...
It sounds to me you don't care about rating that much at all though π You work hard to get it as high as you can, honest work. Then some guy/girl comes along sees you're a second late and claims.
Only when i'm timed out because of something i can't control i'd be upset. If i get timed out because i'm lazy, i'm fine. When i get timed out when my vacation setting is on it's a bit different. If i nicely asked my opponents to refrain from claiming (IF they could, almost all my games have sufficient timebank), i'd be annoyed to see if they still claimed. But not more.
Originally posted by TheMaster37You're telling me that there's nowhere you could go in three weeks time (assuming you had already expended your timebank) to make one single move to keep from being timed out? I don't buy it. I repeat: you would deserve to be timed out.
No sympathy for a computer breakdown? Get a heart.
Well here in the quiet Netherlands there isn't a internet-cafe on every corner. I'd actually have to go to another city for that. And you don't strike me as the type that would go to his neighbour "hey, can i use your computer? I REALLY need to make a chess-move"
And to make sure you got the point of that post, find out what Hypothetically means, if you don't know and try not to aim your posts directly at me.

Here, I'll give you a hypothetical scenario: IF we play each other and you time out, I'll claim the win the very second I'm eligible to do so.
Hi, I would just like to say for the record that I think that every timeout against me while I where on vacation was made automatically. So I'm not feeling angry with anyone. But would instead use the chance to say thanks to all of those who did not time me out while they had the chance. And don't worry I'll soon be back at 1700+.π
Some say you should plan such things so as to avoid timeouts, but that is allmost impossible because normally i don't know where and when I'm going on vacation until 2 month's before. And just before the vacation I had a one week vacation which used up some of the timebank. And before that I had exams so I didn't make that many moves. What I'm trying to say is that it's hard too plan how long you'll be in a tournament. Some of the tournaments I where in were half a year old.π

And if I dare suggest that we should have a meaningful "vacation flag" system that actually pauses games (whilst preventing it from being abused (as I have done on many occasions)) the vast majority of vocal regular subscribed site users will be against it - so what can you do?!
And we go again. I've listened openly to every suggestion you and others have had. Every time there has been a flaw that would make the system worse, either by allowing abuse or excluding certain players. I don't think anyone was abusive, just practical. I got timed out last week when I went 1 hour beyond limit with my VF on & stuck in the depths of Cumbria and it stung. But until someone comes up with a better system were stuck with the one we have.
If there are any suggestions then let's hear them and we can evaluate them.

Everyone gets about 21 days a year off. That would be the vacation setting.
But he's seemed to replace it with timebanks.
There is no solution that will satisfy everyone... we know this!

The question, for me, is not whether the rules allow a time-out victory, as they clearly do. Anyone can claim a victory as soon as the skull appears...no bid deal. The question is; are you here to play chess or are you here to win? If you are here to play chess why would you use the option to claim a victory? Especially when someone has the vacation flag up, and you know they will return. I do not time people out unless they are non-stars or have no vacation flag and have been gone so long I start to question if they will ever return. This is MY policy…nobody is required to follow it, other than me. Claim all the wins you like…but before you do, think why you are doing it. I really feel that if you are here to play chess there is no reason to claim a win unless there are extraordinary circumstances. If you insist on claiming “the second it becomes available”, as some have suggested…I think you are not here to play chess, you are here to win. If all you want to do is win I’m sure you can find a checkers website for children to use to your hearts content. π
