This is a well put post and I hope people take the time to read it.
I have had my fair share of spats with people here and there and am in no way innocent of treating people less well than I should from time to time. However, I also like to think I have given a lot to this site over the years. My near 1000 recs were gained over 3 years of posting at a e that have something to say, but the moment things turn nasty I'm out. A one time offer.
You have given a lot to this site.
EDIT: No, wait. I will say something else. Seeing as how I'm not in any of these clans whose private forums are so famous.
I can't help noticing that on one side of some of these conversations are a large number of the people whose wit and humour I appreciate and who are a large part of the reason why I come into the forums here (seeing how I signed up primarily to play chess). On the other side are several of the people who appear to have no wit whatsoever and tend to alternate between irritating and exasperating.
It's not all one way or the other, of course. There are people on both sides who are capable of interesting contributions, and there are people on both sides who I just wish would shut up a bit more often.
But right now the main thing I can see is that the quality of conversation is in danger of going down as everyone retreats into their respective bunkers. And as a person who isn't in any of the relevant bunkers, that more than anything cheeses me off.
No one bunch of people gets to decide what the forums are 'for'. Some people want serious conversation, some people want fun. Most of us want one or the other at different times. We all have different personalities.
I suppose I even have to accept that what some of us want is to leave our brains behind entirely.
But there is room for everybody here in different forums and in different threads. The one thing I do NOT want is the whole thing to come crashing down because people insist on hunting down their favourite quarry, chasing them from thread to thread and insulting them just for the sake of it, with no consideration for whether it's appropriate to THAT THREAD. Or that forum.
I'm not saying absolutely everything anyone says has to be rigidly and self-righteously 'on topic'. But you all know the difference between saying something because the thread triggered a tangential idea, and saying something because you have it in for Person X and will take any opportunity you have to flame them. Just get a grip, hold it in and wait for an appropriate moment.

Take Xanthos for example. The guy is so repressed and anal retentive that tries to get attention by making anti-semitic jokes! For crying out loud! If he cannot accept his homosexuality that's fine for me, but the little bratt comes along and tries to be despective, arrogant, and flamer like he doesn't in real life because everybody despises him and thinks he ...[text shortened]... or some insignificant 'internet life' which is 0.00001% of the real, flesh and blood one.
