The RHP Prose contest 2024
Rules:
* We do a contest for original prose, written by RHP members. So please contribute only things you have written yourself. All material should be thought of as copyrighted and authors who wish will be attributed to their work. (Those who wish to be anonymous can get that also).
* Language is English.
* Length is no more than 1000 words (excluding the title).
* Topic is "midwinter" or "christmas"
* You can send your entries either via (sometimes multiple) PM to me on RHP. Or you can send a file with a reasonable format (txt, rtf, doc, docx, odt, pdf (not secured) ) to Ponderable_Dickens@Yahoo.com. I will try to send receipts. Please contact me if I don't (it has happened that mails were in the SPAM).
* each author can send in up to three contributions. You can always change contributions, send edited versions, or pull back if you want to until I posted the stories.
* The competition ends in five weeks time: Tuesday 17th of December 17:00 GMT.
* I will create a new thread with the stories, in which can be voted (three votes: 1st, 2nd and 3rd).
* If the story can't be posted on the Forum I will try to identify the reason and streamline accordingly (If you don't want this to happen try posting the story to see if it goes through yourself , don't forget to delete it immediately after the test.)
If something comes up, I will add to this set of rules.
@Ponderable said1. is there a minimum word count?
* Length is no more than 1000 words (excluding the title).
2. may the christmas theme be grinchy?
3. i really like that you do this for our community, thank you
@rookie54 saidThank you for the questions:
1. is there a minimum word count?
2. may the christmas theme be grinchy?
3. i really like that you do this for our community, thank you
No there is no minimum (I doubt, that a zero word story will garner many votes 😉 )
How the writers treat the theme is up to them, so crinchy is perfectly accetable.
...and though you didn't ask, this was not very hemisphere-sensitive, sorry for that.
@vivify saidEven English-speaking people know the melody and what the title means.
Does the title also have to be in English?
For example, an entry titled "Für Elise" but the rest is English.
Depends if the title of your work is as recognizable.
It’s Christmas time
And I need a rhyme
It’s Ponderable’s fault
And I cannot default
So here we go
Let it snow
Do I cook turkey
The answer is quirky
If I play chess
Dinner’s a mess
If I resign
Dinner will be fine
When I serve pud
Will my move be a dud
Served with brandy
Will it make my Queen randy
But I am after the King
And not the ring
A mate I am after
And live happily ever after
Merry Christmas

In fact you can write in any language you want, just don't expect, that on a site with mainly English speakers many will understand. Single words or sentences in foreign (or even invented) languages have been aprt of the competition. YOu might also have a non-pronouncable title.
@Suzianne saidYou are invited to write a Sfience Fiction story if you can connect to the topic.
Yes, I had a sci-fi entry years ago.
(When is Christmas on a deep space station? Is midwinter discsernible from summer on Pluto?....)
