Very interesting study, Xanthos.

I'm surprised that so many recs have been doled out in the Spirituality forum. In your analyses did you come to any conclusions regarding the Spirit forum in particular? My guess would be that people from many of religious groups (and including atheists) are reccing each other's posts as a means of expressing support in numbers for the beliefs they share. It doesn't surprise me that most of the religious members would attempt to show support by mass conformity, such is the essense of religion, but then why is it that the atheists, who are fighting the subjugation of religion, seem to band together as yet another herd who attempt to convert others to their beliefs? I just had a glance at the Spirit forum and it's a complete catastrophe. My point is that members should not be able to rec posts in that forum as the recomendations themselves are completely meaningless and are nought but further evidence of the lethargic mediocrity of all pointless religious argument.

I do believe this is the first time I agree with you on anything!

It's like a zoo in there.

The Agreement recs seem to come from Debates and Spirituality equally. However, they are not the only recs you see in those forums. You also see plenty of News/Debate Copy Paste (ivanhoe is a major offender), News/Debates Link Only and Non-humorous Insult (also occasional One Liner/Original Wit but they get lost in the noise).

Personally I think that recs should be for original or useful contributions to the forums. However as my research showed this is far from the case.

Gatecrasher, any funding body who punishes for publishing neutral results should be shot from a cannon. I also shouldn't keep quiet until I find what I want to find it would unethical. Imagine if I was testing a drug to see if it was safe. The first 5 times I ran the test I got an unacceptable level of cancers in the test animals, I keep this quiet. Then in the 6th test I manage to squeeze inside the safety margin (actually it's the margin of uncertainty of the test). Is my drug safe?

You could have made your "point" more concisely, windbag.

I see your rec was for agreement rather than insight.

Pffft. You "took a glance" and came to the conclusion that the forum is pointless and that the posters are all sheep.

Your rec came from Jesus.

Shows what happens when you pray enough....

"Dear Jesus, if you could hook me up with a total of 60 recs by the end of the week, I promise to stop with the smartie joke"

What category does that rec fall under? Hope you're not peeved that your two month's research is a total waste of time.

Jesus got banned for cheating, and I'll take another glance at the spirituality forum.

Okay...
We have Jesus freaks on one side trying to reinforce their own beliefs, or to spread the word; and anti-Jesus freaks on the other side trying to convince them that they are wrong, because they have the power of rationality.

It's a basketcase full of mixed nuts! I just read a recced post that included:
JOHN LENNON:
Some years before during his interview with an American Magazine, he said: "Christianity will end, it will disappear. I do not have to argue about
that. I am certain. Jesus was ok, but his subjects were too simple, Today we are more famous than Him" (1966)". Lennon, after saying that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, was shot six times.

followed by the predictable chaos.

Why do the Christians bother to post their dogmatic drivel if no-one will believe them, apart from other Christians? Why do non-Christians bother to argue with them, has ANY Christian ever been converted to atheism on that forum? It's pointless. You may as well switch off your computer and practise bending spoons with your mind, you'll probably get further.

Amongst the bigots, cranks, morons, psychopaths, etc, who populate the forum, there are a number of posters who have very interesting things to say, from whom I've learnt quite a bit. I won't spoil your forthcoming spiritual odyssey by sayin who they are.
