I have a feeling this has more to do with improving turnaround time than anything else, as the actual repair takes a little while. So they send you a fixed one from a pool they have on hand, fix your broken machine and then it goes into the pool for the next sucker...er...customer.
Did you still have to send it off? I imagine it was just beyond repair.
Both mine and a friend's box went RROD and were handled this way. Neither of us got back the boxes we sent in, although both came back with the same graphic connection ports, etc.
Unfortunately, they're all junk so it doesn't really matter which one they send back. MS really blew it with the thermal design of the 360. It's a shame because I really like the rest of the 360 experience.

There is a 3 year warranty on this now.

I've had one repaired myself. And I don't believe even a proof of purchase was required, just the S/N off the back.
I have had one sitting on the shelf for over 18 months now. Bought it in mid 2006, and got the RROD after about 4 months. Never bothered to fix it because its seemed like too much trouble plus I play mostly Halo 1, 2, and 3. So I just went back to Halo 1 & 2.
Last night I registered mine on the website and printed off the shipping label .. cool. Seems like they will repair it for free.
