I'll be nice.

Thank you thank you.
Okay, you guys are free to go now.
DEADLINE: 15th August and this is not negotiable ... er um ... but I will probably except entries there or thereabouts.
Thanks for the entries thus far, I have enjoyed listening to them.
I've added another track. This one I just finished, so its an RHP special.
Demonseed, here's an idea. Instead of grouping everything into separate categories where you might end up with only one or two competing tracks, rather just have one big group that includes every entry. People can then rank their favourites (12 pts for the favourite track, 10 for 2nd, 8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 etc)
That way you'll end up with an overall winner, and then based on the scores received you can determine group winners like best instrumental, best original, best cover, best computer track, best band etc, etc. In fact you won't be limited by the number of categories, because you don't need to split the entries up at all.

It's a bit like mixing straight-forward photography and advanced editing, they are just completely different things. Of course that also happens to a degree within categories (which is the reason why I wasn't all that happy with the original categories), but categories make things a bit easier, at least if they are chosen well. And as you could see in the last round of the photo comp, votes within categories can be quite different from overall votes.

P.S.: Don't forget the photo comp and RHP Faces...

Originally posted by demonseedIt sounds good to me, the only thing I was wondering about was the "Best Musician/Technique" thing - I don't know if these two can be grouped together. Sometimes a piece is technically brilliant, but lacks musicality, and vice versa (or technique just isn't that important in the piece). If you want just one overall category, I'd simply call it "Best Musician".

I get your point, though. I suppose the other alternative is to determine categories, but to allow every qualifying track to compete in each category. So there are tracks that could compete in two or more categories.
So people vote for these categories separately. Of course, people may end up with voting fatigue if there are too many categories. And you still need an overall category. Sonhouse won that last time.

I agree that we'd still need an overall category, or even several. Starrman had two overall categories: Overall Submission and Best Musician; and two "semi-overall" categories: Best Composer and Best Lyrics, which both only apply to a subgroup of pieces (original pieces and songs with original lyrics) and are about a specific aspect of the piece. Sonhouse won three of them! 😲
