Has anyone noticed that we have a winner?
Can I re-enter Edna's Sports in the humor category?

In one of the earlier rounds, someone was allowed to reenter a picture because he had accidentally entered it for the wrong round, but normally I don't think pictures should be entered for more than one round. But I am open for discussion.

I was joking. I had hoped people caught the irony in this masterpiece photo, but alas, it did not carry the day. ;-)

OK, I will comment on my masterpiece "Edna's Sports." It was taken in Harlan County, Kentucky and it pretty well typifies the what we think of as "Kentucky." When I think of sports, I think of a healthy environment, so this picture was full of irony to me. Clearly there is nothing going on there but marathon cigarette smoking and tobacco spitting. Welcome to my world. I should have won this round just by virtue of suffering through this area. It ain't Chicago is it.

Some more detail about "Powers Out Toughest Stains":

My wife and I were having a weekend break in Cape Town when we passed this shanty town near the airport. Although, there is such abject poverty, there is something so heroic about how the town has been constructed from any spare materials that come to hand. The end result is something quite vibrant and colourful.

The irony is that instead of providing alternative accomodation, the council has left everything intact, fenced it off, and supplied electricty to the shacks.

It was shot on a Canon G5. The title is clearly visable on the soap advertising board in the original photo. Unfortunately the detail was lost in getting the pic below 200kb. Here is an insert of the original:

We stopped the car and I shot a sequence of pics of the whole town. I've stitched these together (not perfectly) and posted it, if anyone is interesting in seeing the full extent of this amazing town as seen from the road, its here:

Were those kids on their way to relieve you of your camera?

Only joking... nice to see the detail in the shot.

Bump for Niallone, although I am not sure he'll see it.

Hi...
apologies for the poor explanation....

Wishful was taken in Xian (China) one very rainy day last year.
The location is unimportant as it could be a city anywhere.
It was taken 'from the hip' on a very busy street and shows an unbrella'd man standing in front of a beach paradise poster. I probably cropped it too tightly as the scene around the poster was one of urban decay and very much juxtaposed to the tropical backdrop. Thus the title... 'wishful' (i.e far away fields etc)..

Thanks for dropping in. 🙂 I thought it must be a poster, although I was surprised that it didn't have any writing on it. If we had such a poster somewhere here in Norway or in Germany, it would almost certainly be advertising for a travel agency, and would have some slogan, prices, and the name of the travel agency written on it.

I thought it was kind of fun to figure it out, and this would have been lost if the urban surroundings had been included. But my guess is that the picture would have gained more than it would have lost, and it would have fit the category better (the poster could have been in a village or at a country road for all we knew).

I would definately have given it some points if I had realised.

As it was, I was confused as to what was happening, and why the pic was there. I thought it had been photoshopped extensively.

Do you have the original pic with the urban decay? I think it'd be interesting to see.

Cheers,

D

Hi D.!

Sorry when I say cropped ... i mean cropped/framed in the lens at the time of taking... (as distinct from any post production in Photoshop).. i was sorry afterwards that I didn't stop and take a longer range shot... but it was raining :-)

Thx for the feedback...

I would have voted for Wishful, highly, if the rest were included. It was confusing, otherwise. With the rest, it would have been clear, though. Good idea.
