RHP Photography: Unexpected Combinations

I know I am not the only one who misses the RHP Photography Competition. I am not going to resurrect it, and Wheely, who seemed to have concrete plans to do so, has gone AWOL. Maybe someone else will take over some day, maybe not, but in any case I thought we don't need to wait for a competition to have a photography thread. The two things I miss most about the photo comp are the themes that encouraged me to try things I would otherwise never have thought of trying, and the discussion. So my idea with this thread (and if it works out, further photography threads) is that people can show each other pictures related to a theme and discuss them. I am not going to host the pictures - if someone would like to host them, that would be great, otherwise people will need to find some place to upload them themselves and post a link. I don't think we need a deadline (even though deadlines work great for me as a motivator, so without it it'll be harder to overcome my procrastination); pictures could be added at any point.

As for the theme, I was inspired by a weird dream I had a while ago. In that dream, I saw a picture (or possibly a scene that I thought would make an interesting picture) of a large plate that had some sort of pedestal with a pile of small fishes on one side and a coffee mug on the other side, and I was thinking that "Fish 'n' Coffee" would be a good title for the picture. If anyone would like to take a "Fish 'n' Coffee" picture, I would be delighted, but it would be a bit narrow for a theme, so I decided to make it "Unexpected Combinations" instead. If everybody hates the theme, we can still change it, but if there's any interest at all, I'd like to go ahead with it. If people have other suggestions for a theme, we could always have parallel photography threads with different themes.

This is work in progress, so feel free to criticise or make suggestions. And if you know people who are interested in photography, but who may not read this forum, tell them about this thread!

Ah, "Juxtapositions" . I'm always on the look out for those.

My camera bag and beautiful scenery is one that pops up time and time again.

If that is the theme, I would suggest that there be two categories. One for edited or photoshopped ideas and one for those that are "pure."

As it's not a competition, I don't really see the need for two categories. People are free to enter photoshopped or "pure" pictures, or both. I am not sure what it would achieve to split them up into two categories.

I'll try to participate. Not an easy subject though.

Hey, I love the idea of attempting to interpret a dream with photography, Noodles. Very nice.

I'm photographing a wedding Saturday week. I have about 7 weddings coming up in a short space of time, with me photographing 3 of them, but I can improve my portfolio at the others (I'm planning on getting into the wedding photography business, and have done one already... http://farm1.static.flickr.com/188/439759718_d28513c26f_o.jpg )

So I decided my existing kit (Canon 350D with 15-55 kit lens, and a crappy Sigma telephoto) wasn't good enough, and now was the time to take a bit of a gamble, to speculate to accumulate. So I ordered a 24-70L f2.8 lens and a Speedlite 430EX.

Now, I'm just after realising that I have to learn from scratch how to do flash photography in the next week and a bit, while I'll only (hopefully ) have the flash for 2 to 3 days max. There's a lot to learn, and I'd hate to really feck up the shots of the day if I use it incorrectly.

So, basically, any tips on using flash. I figure if I always either diffuse the flash, or bounce it, I should be safe enough, but am a bit worried about having to change settings/set exposure comp. Anybody have any tips on these?

Cheers,

D

Nice lens!

This is a must read for flash photography on a canon eos: http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

I found it confusing at first that the flash behaves differently according to the mode you shoot in. This part is especially relevant:

But the best advice is probably: practice as much as you can during the days you have before the wedding (and have extra batteries ready 🙂 )

Funny. I wish I was better, too.

Bump with content:

I've always liked polaroids, though I've never really used it myself, other than the occasional shot with our family camera when I was a kid. This is a remarkable, and touching collection, which has gotten quite some attention lately: http://photooftheday.hughcrawford.com/

Funny.

This is one of the shots I was going to post...

and this was one of Crawford's...

Anyway, we came across that when wandering around chilling out. As a self portrait, I think it captures my best side.
