This is a must read for flash photography on a canon eos: http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/
I found it confusing at first that the flash behaves differently according to the mode you shoot in. This part is especially relevant:

But the best advice is probably: practice ...[text shortened]... ou can during the days you have before the wedding (and have extra batteries ready 🙂 )

That tip was life saving, DdV. After reading it, I decided straight away I had to use P mode. I'd have probably gone with AP and suffered a lot more blurring. Come to think of it, I should have used AP for some movement effects, as the flash will freeze some of the action while maintaining a nice blur. Ah well, live and learn.
I only got it the day before the wedding, so had to do some serious study, before deciding whether I was going to use it or not. Thank god I decided to use it. It's brilliant.
Having said that, I think my favourite photo of the day was taken without the flash. All the thanks for this one go down to my f2.8 lens...

The hsot you posted was great, good lighting. The light in the upper right corner seemed somewhat distracting though, did you try to crop it out?

Consensus was that the light was distracting, as DdV said, so I cropped and removed the original.
Here's the cropped version...

And here's a straight from camera crop. She was an excellent subject. 😉

Part of a really risque page (as the groom removes the garter with his teeth) in the photobook, which I hope she allows me put in.

I like this one even better, very dynamic picture. Have you tried burning in the bright spot on her right, the guitar and the guitar players face behind her? I think this might isolate her a bit better.

Great lighting of the dress, it's good to see all the detail in it. But I miss a bit of contrast, maybe because the grooms shoes are the only really dark element in the picture. And as I'm typing this, I realise there's probably something wrong with me for looking at the grooms shoes in this shot. Never mind. 🙂

I considered darkening the bright thing behind her, but never considered turning everything apart from her and the main mic to black. It could be a very good plan now that I look at it again.
I'm ambivalent about the mic. I really like the way it adds depth and grounds the shot (ie: the blur isn't due to camera shake), but I also think it highlights the softness of the singer.
LOL. The groom's shoes ARE nice, aren't they?

I suddenly have a reason to put together a portfolio for next Tuesday and she definitely makes it.
This is one I really like, but would like to know what others think, as I (currently) think it's in as well. It's a shot of a flower I took, converted to b&w and then inverted.

Originally posted by RagnorakThe composition is nice, and I like most of the inversion effect, with the heart of the flower all lit up and the light lines on the petals on the right. On the other hand, I don't like what it does with the shadows on the left petals and especially under the stamens (?, not sure of the correct term). I inverted it back to check out the original, and I like the natural look of that one much better.
Cheers Palynka.

edit: I'd certainly keep in the mic in that wedding singer picture. I don't mind the softness of the singer, it just accentuates her movement. And your right, it adds depth. I think editing it out would leave you with an unbalanced composition
Originally posted by DdVI think what I really like about the inverted version is the way to centre of the flower looks like an orb of stars.

Not entirely AWOL, more ADTCBMC (absent due to circumstances beyond my control).
However, am now RMICOSC (rather more in control of said circumstances). Can recommend brandy!
So, nobody has found any unexpected combinations? Maybe we'll just have to turn this into a general photography thread. Actually Ragnorak has already done so. I still think it could have been an interesting subject, but maybe it's just too difficult. I have been quite stuck myself (although that's partly because I have had too much else to think about, so I haven't spent much thought on it). I'll still be on the lookout for unexpected combinations, though. Maybe I can find some during my holidays.

Hello Nordles, how are you 🙂 🙂
Apologies for the disappearing trick. Wasn´t intentional you know.
Well, I did actually write a fair bit of software for the RHP Photo comp but am not really in a position to do much with it for the time being. Hopefully I can get back on track on that one in the not too distant future.
I like the idea of this thread in the meantime. Everyone agrees a title, people go and shoot stuff, people post their piccies and everyone else just makes a comment or two. No dates, no time limits etc etc.
I come back to RHP and find little has changed though apart from the fact that I can no longer subscribe ´cause I don´t have an actual credit card any more and they don´t accept debit cards. Guess I´ll just have to go and get one now.
Hope all is well with you though Nordles 🙂

In Ireland at least, that counts as an unexpected combination.
Nice to see you back Wheely. Anytime soon, I expect a couple other of the photo comp die hards reappearing.
