Good to see you back Wheely!
What do you guys think of hdr (High dynamic range) images? I find much examples horrible (like this one: http://www.chromasia.com/iblog/archives/0806111949.php). Many of the pictures that use hdr overdo it in my opinion. But I think it's an interesting technique when used moderatly. This is my attempt to make an hdr image that still seems somewhat natural: http://www.justanotherphotoblog.be/index.php?showimage=211
Any thoughts?

I've seen some examples of hdr which looked terrible in colour but excellent in b&w.
I would have referred to this shot as exposure blending, but I was speaking to an enthusiast at the weekend and he reckons this is hdr...

My work process was to prepare the file ignoring the sky, and then using Camera Raw, I underexposed by 2 stops and then pasted the underexposed image onto a layer which I then used a layer mask on, to only show the sky.

Thanks. What software do you use? Photomatix has a feature to eliminate the ghosting effect of moving objects. I don't know whether it's powerful enough to deal with moving monasteries though 🙂

I wouldn't call this hdr either, exposure blending seems a more appropriate term. I guess it's subjective how you define both terms, but I associate hdr with more complicated exposure mixing. What you did seems much closer to simply burning in the sky. I think a similar effect could be quite easily produced in a traditional darkroom (still a reference point for me) by burning and split grade printing. There's no way to manually reproduce the HDR I posted, either in a digital or a traditional darkroom.

Has to be a good Brandy of course.
Hello Nordles, how are you 🙂 🙂
Apologies for the disappearing trick. Wasn´t intentional you know.
Well, I did actually write a fair bit of software for the RHP Photo comp but am not really in a position to do much with it for the time being. Hopefully I can get back on track on that one in the not too distant fu ...[text shortened]... rds. Guess I´ll just have to go and get one now.
Hope all is well with you though Nordles 🙂
I never thought your disappearing trick was intentional. Which, of course, made me all the more worried. I hope everything is okay with you now.
I am leaving for Germany and the UK in two days, so I probably won't be around much for the next three weeks. But I hope I'll be able to take some nice pictures. 🙂

Look forward to being able to see some of the results!

At the moment I am still in Germany. I have taken many pictures of my nieces, but I haven't found any unexpected combinations yet.
