Hello there. A friend of mine has recently connected to sky broadband. He has a netgear router with a firewall on it. It has a rule on it that states: -
inbound connection:
Default Yes Any BLOCK always Any Any
I wish to download something of limewire and I suspect that this is blocking this. Problem is, I can't disable this rule. How do I do this anyone?

As far as the port thing goes, it depends on your router. You generally need to access your router homepage to configure the ports. Check the router's manual for the URL for your Router or find out your Default Gateway and use that as the URL.
To get your Default Gateway, go to Start > Run
Enter CMD
Type 'ipconfig' and hit enter. It lists it there.
Enter the number in your address bar

Now go to the 'firewall rules' page and add a new incoming rule to allow the limewire service.
The firewall rules are read top down until a match is made. The default rule - which blocks all incoming traffic - is read last, so if you've set up the limewire service properly all should be ok.
I don't know about limewire so you'll need to find out which ports it uses and whether it's using TCP or UDP so that you can set the service up properly.
Also if you are starting the connection, then it will classed as an outbound connection - even though you are downloading stuff. The inbound rules apply to external connections only.

I've just spent about two hours trying to delete the 'block any' at the bottom. Thank you. The murky stuff is becomong clearer now.

It's a good idea to keep the rules on it as restrictive as possible for incoming connections.
As I said before when you download something from the internet the incoming rules are not involved, this is because the connection is set up from you to the outside world - once set up it's a two-way pipe.
The incoming rules allow connections in to your side of the router without you being involved. You should make sure that these rules are as restrictive as possible and absolutely necessary for what you're doing. Otherwise it's like having a really good lock on your front door to stop thieves getting in, and then leaving the windows all open.
