Some of those gooses interpretation of coming through the gate closes down some heavy aspects of rucking. This is a contact sport!
Also this "crouch, touch, pause, engage" at the scrum is so varied even our Super 14 refs annoy bejeeezus out of me.
Dont worry mate, the Boks should whack Scotland. The Wobblies will do it hard against the English unless ...[text shortened]... ell hand over the ball every time it goes out! The local fith grade drunks throw it in better!
I'm gonna enjoy it when the IRB introduces ref ratings like we'll see in the Super 14 next season.
The Welsh were allowed to slap the ball out of our scrumhalf's hands THREE TIMES. WTF!? They were constantly offside at the ruck, but god forbid he throws the ball in skew into the scrum! I don't see ANY scrumhalf's throwing in straight at the scrum these days, including the Welsh, but the boks got pinged.
Anyway, good luck. I'm sure the Wallabies got a wake-up call this week after the Italy game, eh?
Originally posted by CrowleyI hope they got a wake up call, but i doubt it. We are ordinary in the forwards at the moment. Some players too old, some players leaving early for big bucks in French, Japanese and English teams and no front rowers who can keep their feet in the scrums. Too many ex professional rugby league players in the backs too. I shudder to think how bad our rugby would be if we didnt have Deans as a coach. The Aussies have to stay on the attack and not let the English settle in and we are half way home.

Some of the coaching and selection problems in the have been caused by the huge money being offered to players for playing less games. Buck Shelford just released his biography after a match winning performance against cancer.
In it he refers to Player Power having taken over the game. Players basically get what they want, do what they want. Up until the professional era the coaches were like gods. You bloody well did as you were told instantly or you were thrown out on your ear. Mistakes were absolutely not allowed.. make one and you'd be severely punished make two and go home.
They are now in an employment contract world with all the protection and security of occupational health and safety and pension plans. Buck deplores the current rugby scene but doesn't blame the guys for looking after themselves and their families with lucrative overseas contracts.. the pension schemes set them up for life.
Deans is not only a proven technical expert but he is a leader of men.
He is like your favourite teacher at school that you'd want to impress and work hard for. I'm sure he'll take Australia to much better days. Employment contracts and staff appraisals are part of daily life coaches now have to know how to use them to move the dead wood on and let the new wood grow...
22 - 3 NZ over Ireland
14 - 10 SA over Scotland
28 - 14 Australia over England
The ABs were terribly rusty most front liners having had two weeks off with golf and visits to the Guinness factory. I counted 12 dropped balls, 8 knock ons (lost count). There's no explaining Carters poor form with the boot missing two from right in front in the first half with no wind at all.
I didn't agree with the penalty try.. seriously thought he tried to turn the ball inwards but only thought that after the last of 4 replays showed his wrist angle left to right.
OGara had a terrible game for Ireland and I doubt his long kick for 3pts will save him.
O'Driscoll I thought lacked sting but made up for it with brilliant defence and precision in the middle.. he's an ace Centre.
Nonu was my back of the match and Brad Thorn had a blinder both in the think hard stuff and also joining in the back line for a try and a couple of deft touches.
The ref was consistent.. he just let everything go regardless, talked a lot, smiled a lot but didn't control this game. The first yellow card for the cynical deliberate knock out was called from above and the second for the head high tackle was after Jonathan Kaplin once again couldn't help himself and called it from the sideline..
No free to air coverage at all of the SA game news item said Scotland was unlucky and SA once again are furious about the refs.
Ditto no coverage of Aus Eng game but must have been a sour dour affair with only one try. England apparently their own worst enemies consistently infringed with a series of offsides to hand Australia seven penalties to Matt Giteau. Gitteau also converted Ashley Coopers Try 11mins from the whistle.

Ashley Cooper try
Mortlock penalty

I don't mind the odd bad decision, and I can even stand losing a game because of it if I know my team was actually the better team, but this is a professional era and these guys shouldn't be allowed to show consistent incompetence like we have seen these past two weekends...
It's ridiculous!
The boks again looked a little flat and the forwards still want to score center-like tries by loitering in the backline, showing the Scots not enough respect, but the first half should've been dominated by the boks, as it was most of the time.
Then, when we get into a scoring position, Mr Pearson decides to give the Scots a let-off with some mystery penalties, even deciding to penalize us for pulling down a scrum that never actually went down.
What a crock!
The Scots threw the ball around at the end and got close, but the better team won, regardless of the ref's best efforts.
PRICELESS MOMENT OF THE WEEKEND:
The Scottish prop looking bemused at the ref for penalizing him for playing the ball off his feet, as he got away with everything until that moment. Beautiful.

as much as would've like it not to be a penalty try...i'm sue it was. tommy, weather he meant it or not stopped NZ scoring a certain try by knocking the ball out of play inside his own area. that for me is a penalty try.
OGara had a terrible game for Ireland and I doubt his long kick for 3pts will save him.
the problem is that we don't have anyone else, we relay on ronan to much and when he doesn't perform it shows in the results.
O'Driscoll I thought lacked sting but made up for it with brilliant defence and precision in the middle.. he's an ace Centre.
i don't know if you remember just before the NZ penalty try, time was already up on the half and all brain needed to do was to kick the ball out of play and go in at half time 3-3 against the all blacks.....easily the best team in the world. instead he tries a stupid kick and charge that was never going to work and we get punished. i'm not blaming him for the try but he's an experienced player and should have known to take it in at 3-3 at half time...regroup and try again. it wasn't just him the decision making on the irish side was terrible...especially their kicking choices.
the first thing i wanted kidney to do was make paul o'connell captain...o'driscoll is a truly world class player but he's not a captain....he should be left to just do what he does best.
Hey Dan, two of the bok players have been eye gouged in as many weeks with no reports or citings for foul play by a bok player.
This, after the boks have been frustrated by infringing Northern hemisphere teams who are not punished by the refs when slowing the balls down at ruck time etc.
The boks are showing just how dirty they are, eh?
Originally posted by CrowleyI tried to find a penalty count for the season but there isn't a table for such stats that I could find.

I do know England complained long and loud that they had so many penalties awarded against them in the Aus match...
I heard a refereeing discussion on the radio on Sunday.. senior players favour the ref up top being able to report incidents to the ref on the field but want the ref to be the one to make the call. I like that idea... so long as we don't have to listen to it and so long as Kaplin doesn't get a mic to yabber into.
NZ v Munster Close call!!! 18 - 16 to ABs after a late try saved the score card.
Yes a third string line up of abs but 11 players on international duty from Munster...
It was still one of the most spirited games I've seen and shows we desperately need to see the midweek games reinstated on proper tours.
The nz coach Graeme Henry should have given his front line players another run. They were rusty and need matches to form combos. This would have been a great game for that with a couple of new fellas blooded..
I'm sticking to my opinion formed before the 07 wc that this is worst period of all black play I can recall since the 70s (actually in my lifetime. AB rugby is not all about winning games it's about playing the game well, not making mistakes and putting together the worlds best skills into beautiful flowing combinations. I hate it when nz don't put up the top 15 and then watch them drop the ball time and time again...but worse is when one of them makes a break and team mates stand and watch with hands on hips.. they are awful as a team and are winning on individual tenacity alone.
Both asst coaches are in the news lately leaving..they obvious feel i and are ready to move on but its time for Graeme Henry to be kicked out.

Yes Dan, we are sooo lucky to have Deans as coach.
Originally posted by lordhighgusBest thing about Deans is the way he knows his player potential and gets it out of them. Then his reading of the game in advance is very accurate and he moulds his team plans to suit his players strengths. Canterbury always produced for the big games and with time you'll find that'll be the case with Aussie.

Unfortunately we have a coach that is clueless and has no concept of team building at all it's almost All Black Corporation now. The company turns out a different firm each week and it's luck they scrape through.
NZ v Wales
yep we'll scrape through ;p
Predict 26 - 18

Can't see that happening. The Welsh won't even get close if your discipline is OK and you guys don't give away too many intercept tries.
Warren Gatland (former Waikato NZ provincial coach) now Wales Coach) says "We want to claim that pride in the nation and what we can do, and we achieved that in the Six Nations. But we have to push on."
He continues to say (and I know you'll love this)
We are cautiously optimistic "They (the Welsh Team) know they have to build on what we did in the second half against the Springboks. We had a lot of the territory then, we were finishing over the top of the Boks and I think we came out of that test with some real belief."
I hope to enjoy a good hard close game.. but I think the abs will be all over the place as usual lately.
