I did learn mechanics last year but really it was pretty basic stuff. I wouldn't want to use it to design a house. Follow plans? Yeah that's nothing more than being able to read and follow instructions. Design? That requires a lot of analysis dedicated to whether this beam or that strut will be carrying too much weight. I'm not learning those skills as they aren't relevant to me.
